INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his greetings to Droupadi Murmu for becoming the 15th President of India and hoped for further development of the Russian-Indian political dialogue and productive cooperation in different areas under her leadership

2. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Indian Foreign Service officers during their Mid-Career Training Program-II on Saturday and said they represent a confident generation and are ready to deliver on national goals and global expectations

3. India’s unique and complex situation and history resurfaced recently with Delhi abstaining on the UN vote condemning the Russian action in Ukrain in 2018,

India signed the $5 billion S-400 Air Defence System deal with Russia. This was despite the relatively recent denomination of ‘Major Defence Partner’ status with the United States in 2016.

4. Four out five permanent member nations of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have extended their support to India’s candidature for a permanent seat in the top world body,

The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any resolution. China is the only country which has not yet supported India’s bid to become a member of the UNSC.

1. World Health Organization (WHO) has declared monkeypox a global health emergency. It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO’s emergency committee on the virus.

WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries.

2. A boat rally was organised to inaugurate Fisheries week in Bangladesh. Minister Rezaul Karim announced, govt is keen to increase production of Hilsa & expand fisheries sector as foreign exchange earner.

3. Pakistan and China on Friday decided to welcome any third country joining the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor for “mutual beneficial cooperation”.

The 3rd meeting of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Joint Working Group (JWG) on International Cooperation and Coordination (JWG-ICC) was held in virtual mode and was co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood and China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao,

4. Ukrainian missile strikes hit a bridge on a Russian supply route in the Russia-occupied Kherson region on Saturday, bridge got minor damage, but still usable condition.

5. Cuba’s Parliament on Friday announced that a referendum will be held on September 25 on a new family law that would legalise same-sex marriages and surrogate parenthood.

6. Iraq on Saturday submitted a request to the UNSC for an urgent meeting over the alleged Turkish airstrikes that hit a resort in Duhok earlier this week.

7. Violence between rival militias in Libya’s capital Tripoli has killed at least 13 people.

8. North Korea has warned the United States and South Korea against conducting joint military drills, saying these exercises were pushing the Korean Peninsula to war.
