1. China adopts cautious approach on Ukraine issue, calls “all parties to exercise restraint”: China has expressed “concern” about the situation in Ukraine and urged “all parties to exercise restraint” while cautiously refraining from taking sides between Russia and Ukraine.
2. Russian President Vladimir Putin on 21 Feb recognized the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk, and Luhansk as independent entities which fueled the fears that Russia may eventually invade Ukraine.
3. We’ll cut Russia off from Western technology if it invades Ukraine: US
Amid escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo on Wednesday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin can do a lot more damage in Ukraine. He, however, added, “If [Putin] chooses to invade [Ukraine]…We’re going to cut him off from Western technology that’s critical to advancing his military [and] cut him off from Western financial resources.”
4. Israel announces support for Ukraine amid Russia tensions
In Israel’s first official comment on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine tensions, the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Wednesday announced its support for the “territorial integrity and sovereignty” of Ukraine. In a statement issued, the ministry expressed concern for Israeli citizens residing in Ukraine. Israel is willing to “transfer humanitarian assistance to Ukraine according to its needs”.
5. Eighteen civilians in Niger have been killed in a militant attack in the west of the country, the government says. It said armed bandits on motorbikes attacked a truck transporting people between two villages in the Tillaberi region.
