1. US Congress member Ilhan Omar visited Pakistan recently on a trip that potentially raises controversial subjects because she went to Kashmir and the trip could inflame Pakistani far-right nationalists.
The Times of India noted that Omar’s visit was “unofficial” and that her visit to “occupied Kashmir (PoK) did not represent the United States government in any way.” The report noted that India had condemned her trip to contested Kashmir as violating India’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
2. Recently, Pakistan carried out an airstrike in Afghanistan that massacred civilians. Reports say that dozens were killed in the airstrike and the New York Times said that 45 had been killed, citing to Afghan officials.
Omar has in the past slammed the US for airstrikes in Somalia and Syria and in Afghanistan but has been silent on the Pakistani airstrike and human rights abuses.
3. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will arrive in New Delhi on 23 Apr, Saturday to celebrate 60 years of relationship between India and the European Union.
4. India has agreed to extend an additional $500 million credit line to help Sri Lanka import fuel, SL Finance Minister Ali Sabry said, amid delays in chalking out a bailout package with the IMF to mitigate the dire financial crisis facing the island nation.
5. Officials from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Ministry of Power, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Ministry of Coal held meetings with the German official.
The discussion revolved around India-Germany’s collaboration to scale up power generation through renewable sources to 500 GW by 2030 and to reach ‘Climate Neutrality’ by 2070.
6. Dismissing UK Labour MP Naz Shah’s remarks on human rights in India, Indian scholar Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi said that Muslims here live in peace and any interference by a foreign nation in India’s internal matter is unwarranted. Confronting the UK MP’s comments, Razvi, Director of Islamic Research Centre, said.
