INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari will visit India this May for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Goa, it is scheduled to held on May 4-5 in Goa.

2. As India surpassed China’s population on Wednesday to become the most populous country in the world, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign ministry, Wang Wenbin, took a sharp dig, saying that while assessing a country’s demographic dividend, it is also important to look at not just its size but also quality.

3. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is trying to ascertain if there is any Pakistan link to the violent demonstration by pro-Khalistan protesters outside the Indian high commission in London last monthmonth, in which pro-Khalistan protesters pulled down the Tricolour and attempted to vandalise the Indian high commission in London.

4. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is in New York on his way to countries in Latin America on an official visit and is slated to meet UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres on the Sudan crisis.

5. External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar to be on nine-day official visit to Guyana, Panama Colombia & Dominican Republic to explore bilateral engagement in new areas.

6. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which is scheduled to launch the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C55 (PSLV-C55) mission on April 22 with Singapore’s TeLEOS-2 as primary satellite and Lumelite-4 as a co-passenger satellite, will will carry out in-orbit scientific experiments by using the spent PS4 (fourth and final stage of PSLV) as an orbital platform.

The PSLV-C55 mission has the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM), where the spent PS4 of the launch vehicle would be utilised as an orbital platform to carry out scientific experiments through non-separating payloads.

7. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released its annual State of World Population (SOWP) report on April 19, 2023. The report focuses on the current state and projections of the world’s population

According to UNFPA State of World Population report India will overtake China as the world’s most populous country this year.

8. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for cooperation in aviation safety.

1. Thirty-one tribals belonging to ‘Hakki-Pikki’ are stranded in Sudan, where violent clashes between a powerful paramilitary force and the country’s armed forces are going on.

They are a semi-nomadic tribal group belonging to the state of Karnataka.
In Kannada, the word ‘Hakki’ stands for ‘bird’ and ‘Pikki’ stands for the verb ‘to catch’. The community is known as the ‘bird catcher,’ which is their traditional occupation.

2. Cuba’s political landscape recently witnessed a significant development as Miguel Diaz-Canel secured a second five-year term as the President of the country.

3. Pakistan has placed its first order for discounted Russian crude oil as it struggles with high external debt and low foreign exchange reserves. The first consignment of Russian oil is expected to arrive at Karachi Port next month. Russian oil import is expected to reach 1,00,000 barrels per day if the first transaction goes through smoothly.

4. A video by SpaceX shows the moment Starship, the world’s biggest and most powerful rocket, exploded moments after its launch on Thursday. Two parts of the rocket failed to separate and Starship exploded four minutes after the liftoff. SpaceX’s first attempt to launch the rocket was postponed due to a “pressurisation issue” with minutes to go on April 17.
