pm narendra modi holds talks with visiting japanese counterpart fumio kishida

1. PM Modi holds productive talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida to boost bilateral economic and cultural linkages during 14th India-Japan Annual Summit. Mr Kishida arrived in New Delhi on 19 Mar. He is on a two-day visit.

2. India, Japan sign six agreements in areas including cyber security, wastewater management and clean energy.

3. Japan’s cooperation in India’s flagship projects such as the Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail has been remarkable. The Prime Minister expressed happiness that Japan will raise its investment target in India to 5 trillion Yen or 3.2 lakh crore rupeess over the next five years.

4. Bring back Subhas Chandra Bose’s remains after DNA test: Netaji’s grandnephew to Kishida
Amid Japanese PM Fumio Kishida’s India visit, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose has requested Kishida to bring back Netaji’s purported remains from Japan’s Renkoji temple. He tweeted a request.

5. India at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has advocated the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) saying that it is important to ensure its implementation in letter and spirit. India attaches high importance to BTWC as a key global and non-discriminatory disarmament Convention, prohibiting an entire category of weapons of mass destruction.

6. The 35th Surajkund International Crafts Mela begins at Faridabad near the national capital Delhi on 19 Mar. The Fair, which is being organised after a gap of two years due to Covid-19, will continue till 4th of April. It will showcase the richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handloom and cultural heritage of the country.

7. Which countries are buying Russian oil & which countries have stopped doing so?

Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bulgaria, China, European Union, France, Germany continue to buy Russian oil. Indian ONGC’s subsidiary Hindustan Petroleum and India’s top refiner Indian Oil also recently bought oil from Russia. Many nations like Britain, Canada and US have stopped buying Russian oil. Australian refiner Ampol, Italian state-owned Eni have also stopped buying oil from Russia.

1. Prosecutor General’s office in Ukraine says a total of 112 children have been killed in the country since the start of the Russian military operation. The office says more than 140 children have been injured since 24th Feb. According to the U.N. children’s agency, more than 1.5 million children had fled Ukraine.

2. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a grim warning to Russia, even as Britain’s foreign secretary accused Vladimir Putin of using peace talks as a “smokescreen” while he ramps up violence against Ukraine.

3. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Moscow to commit to meaningful bilateral talks and stop its invasion of Ukraine, saying it would otherwise take Russia “several generations” to recover from its losses in the war.

4. As lethal shelling rained down on Ukraine’s cities for the fourth straight week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a grim warning to Russia, saying the country would suffer the consequences of the war for generations to come.

On the other hand, a top UK government official expressed fears that Moscow was using the ongoing peace talks as a cover while it stepped up its military onslaught in Ukraine.

6. Russia said its hypersonic missiles had destroyed a large underground depot for missiles and aircraft ammunition in western Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force Command confirmed the attack. According to Russian officials, the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, carried by MiG-31 fighter jets, has a range of up to 2,000 km and flies at 10 times the speed of sound.

6. 2 Chinese jets, 1 helicopter enter Taiwan air defence zone on Mar 18::. Two Chinese Shenyang J-11 fighter jets and one Harbin Z-9 anti-submarine helicopter entered Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Friday. In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense issued radio warnings and deployed air defence missile systems to monitor the activities of the Chinese aircraft. This comes after Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong sailed through the Taiwan strait.

7. UK donates 2 million medical items to Ukraine in past 3 weeks:. The UK has donated two million medical items to Ukraine over the past three weeks. “We’re leading the humanitarian effort to support Ukraine by providing targeted medical support to those in need,” UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said. The Department of Health and Social Care said insulin shots, painkillers and intensive care equipment will reach Ukraine in the coming days.

8. Exams for millions of school students in Sri Lanka were cancelled due to a shortage of paper, officials said on Saturday.
