1. PM Modi holds virtual summit with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; talks about future-oriented partnership between India and UAE

2. India and the UAE signed their first-ever bilateral free trade agreement on Friday. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is expected to raise the total trade up to $100 billion in the next 5-years and will cut import duties on various products while boosting the export of jewellery and apparel. Notably, UAE is India’s third-largest trading partner.

3. India will be setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the United Arab Emirates as a part of its trade agreement. This will be the first time that an IIT will be established abroad. Currently, India has 23 IITs that offer various degrees starting from BTech to doctoral programmes.

4. The Government of India, State Governments of Karnataka and Odisha, and the World Bank have signed loan agreements of 115 million US dollars for the implementation of “Rejuvenating Watersheds for Agricultural Resilience through Innovative Development” (REWARD) Project.

5. The first country to adopt India’s UPI system will be Nepal which will be critical in modernising the neighbouring country’s digital economy. Overview: To deliver the services in Nepal, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), NPCI’s international arm, has partnered with Manam Infotech and Gateway Payments Service (GPS). In Nepal, GPS is the authorized payment system.

1. Mali’s ruling junta on Friday asked French troops to leave Mali without delay and under Malian supervision. The decision by France on Thursday to withdraw was a unilateral move that violated military accords between Mali, France.

2. Canadian police on Friday began arresting protesters part of the “Freedom Convoy” against a COVID-19 vaccine mandate and restrictions for the past three weeks in Ottawa. Two of the protest leaders were arrested on Thursday

3. US ambassador to Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Michael Carpenter on Friday said Russia has probably massed between 1.69-1.9 lakh personnel in and near Ukraine as compared to about 1 lakh on January 30.

4. US military pilot Gail Halvorsen, known as “Candy Bomber” for dropping sweets to children during the Berlin airlift after World War II, of died on Wednesday aged 101. Halvorsen served as a transport pilot during the war before flying food and supplies to West Berlin. Using his own candy ration, Halvorsen began dropping sweets during the airlift, using handkerchiefs as parachutes.

5. At least 13 children among 117 killed by mudslides and floods triggered by heavy rains in Petropolis, Brazil.

6. Dutch PM apologises for violence during Indonesian independence war : The Netherlands’ PM Mark Rutte on Thursday offered a full apology to Indonesia for “excessive violence” by the Dutch during the Indonesian independence war. “We have to accept the shameful facts,” he said. Rutte offered the apology after a historical review found the Dutch military had engaged in systematic, excessive and unethical violence from 1945 to 1949.

7. Hong Kong will postpone an election for its next leader till May 8 to fight a deteriorating COVID-19 outbreak.

8. Bill Gates, noted philanthropist and creator of Microsoft have been awarded the Hilal-e-Pakistan, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian honor, for his efforts to help eradicate polio in the country.
