SCO 22nd summit

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. PM Modi will be on a two-day visit to Samarkand of Uzbekistan from today to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit.

5. India will invite Bangladesh as a Guest Country to take part in the G 20 meeting during its Presidency.

Announcing this in Delhi on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that as part of the G 20 tradition of inviting some Guest Countries and International Organisations (IO) to its meetings and summit, India has decided to invited Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and UAE as Guest Countries.

1. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will hold its 22nd summit in the historic Uzbek city of Samarkand from Sep 15-16. SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming.

Beijing-headquartered SCO is made up of China, Russia, India, Pakistan, as well as four central Asian countries- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. SCO is known as world’s largest and most populous regional institution, covering approximately 60% of the area of Eurasia, 40% of the world population, and more than 30% of global GDP..

2. Ukraine has claimed to discover a ‘torture chamber’ used by Russian troops to hold Ukrainian prisoners. The torture chamber was found in the basement of a police station in Balakliya.

3. A third suspect has been arrested in the attempted assassination of Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández. While Agustina Díaz was detained earlier this week, two others Fernando Sabag Montiel and his girlfriend Brenda Uliarte were arrested shortly after the incident. On September 1, Montiel had pointed a handgun at the vice-president but the gun did not go off.
