1. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido yesterday, June 11. Japan’s Meteorological Agency said, no tsunami warning was issued. The quake was 140 kilometres deep and struck the southwestern part of Hokkaido.
2. The Philippines’ most active volcano is gently spewing lava down its slopes, prompting officials to warn tens of thousands of villagers to be prepared to flee from their homes if the gentle eruption turns into a violent and life-threatening explosion.
3. Iraq’s parliament has approved a budget of 198.9 trillion dinars ($153bn) for 2023 that sets out record spending on a growing public wage bill and development projects to improve services and rebuild infrastructure ruined by neglect and war.
4. The US intends to rejoin the UN’s cultural agency, UNESCO, in July to pay back its dues of over $600 million and reportedly counter China’s influence in the body’s policymaking. Notably, US and Israel stopped funding UNESCO after it voted to include Palestine as a member state in 2011. The US decided to withdraw from UNESCO in 2017.
5. China boosting nuclear arsenal, Pakistan leads India in warheads: Sipri
The nine nuclear-armed countries, including the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India and Pakistan, continue to modernise their nuclear arsenals, leading Swedish think-tank SIPRI said on Monday. According to the Swedish watchdog’s estimate, the size of China’s nuclear arsenal increased from 350 warheads in January 2022 to 410 in January 2023, and the report said it is expected to keep growing.
