Chinese missiles fired over Taiwan

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. India and China have witnessed rising tensions at the LAC over the last two years following the stand-off in Ladakh. Meanwhile, tensions have also risen between the US and China over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan stop Tuesday.

2. The Union Cabinet has approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution, NDC to be communicated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

The updated NDC seeks to enhance India’s contributions towards the achievement of the strengthening of the global response to the threat of climate change, as agreed under the Paris Agreement.

3. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has detected Customs duty evasion of around two thousand 217 crore rupees by Vivo Mobile India Private Limited. Vivo India is a subsidiary company of Vivo Communication Technology Company in China.

4. The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) signs MoU with Bangladesh for emergency supply of petroleum goods.

1. China summoned the US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns to protest US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s high-profile visit to Taipei, warning that Washington will “pay a price” for its “mistakes” and asked it to stop using the Taiwan issue to contain China in any form.

2. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi meets Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen ; China condemns visit & vows to undertake targeted military operations.

3. Chinese missiles are expected to be fired over Taiwan for the first time with People’s Liberation Army (PLA) navy also readying to enter within 12 nautical miles of the self-ruled island, a state media report said on Wednesday, adding the ongoing military drills were “unprecedented”.

The military drills, which started on Tuesday evening, includes “joint blockades, sea assault and land and air combat trainings, involving the use of advanced weapons including J-20 stealth fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles”, the report said, adding exercises were in response to the Taiwan visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

4. US urges citizens to be vigilant against possible anti-American violence abroad following killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Notably, ex-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is currently in Singapore, will now be able to stay there till August 11 as he was reportedly granted a 14-day extension on his short-term visa pass.
