1. The United Nations has said that more than 100 former members of the Afghan govt, its security forces and those who worked with international troops have been killed since the Taliban took over the country. In a report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that more than two-thirds of the victims were allegedly killed extrajudicially by the Taliban or its affiliates.
2. At least 18 people have been killed during torrential rains in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state that caused landslides.
3. The US, Britain and Canada on Monday imposed sanctions on officials in Myanmar. The action has been taken on the eve of the anniversary of the military coup that plunged the country into a crisis. The joint action by the three nations targets judicial officials involved in prosecutions against Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
4. A powerful winter storm has swept through northern Europe, killing several people, destroying houses and vehicles. Strong winds have struck the United Kingdom, Denmark, Poland and Germany, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power.
