‘Will respond with full military might’: Pakistan Army chief during tensions with India

Pakistan

In the wake of increasing tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has made a hard-hitting statement. In a strongly worded statement, Munir stated that the Pakistani armed forces are ready to retaliate with “full military might” against any aggression from India. His statement came just days after the attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area that killed several people, taking bilateral ties to a new low.

‘We will not tolerate any threat’

Speaking to senior military commanders in Rawalpindi, General Munir asserted Pakistan’s armed forces were on high alert and able to defend the country’s sovereignty. “We will not let any threat to our territorial integrity. Any misadventure will be repelled with a vigorous and swift response,” he added. The Army Chief’s assertion is seemingly a straightforward response to Indian threats following the Pahalgam incident, which New Delhi has attributed to cross-border terror.

India accuses finger at Pakistan

India has directly accused Pakistan-based terror groups of planning the attack in Pahalgam, with senior Indian leaders making it clear that military action is not ruled out. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have both cautioned about a likely retaliation, saying those responsible for the attack would be dealt with.

Diplomatic channels strained

Though back-channel negotiations between the two nations had been going on for several months, the Pahalgam terror attack has thrown progress into jeopardy. New Delhi has apparently suspended all talks and there are increasing demands in India for tangible action. Islamabad, on the other hand, dismissed any role in the assault and charged India with “ratcheting up tensions for political dividends.”

International community urges restraint

Other powers such as United States and United Nations have urged the two countries to dial back and stay out of each other’s hair, but with militaries at arms and rhetoric raising, it becomes increasingly likely for a war-on-war to brew.

As matters continue to take shape, the world is nervously following closely, with eyes crossed hoping for diplomacy to emerge victorious against enmities.
