New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal counterattacked Union Home Minister Amit Shah by asking if the development of Delhi could be achieved by targeting him with accusations and criticism. This was said while addressing a public gathering in reaction to Shah’s recent statements where he had accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of governance failures.
Kejriwal’s Retort
Addressing a gathering in East Delhi, Kejriwal said, “Will Delhi develop by abusing me? Instead of making baseless allegations, focus on constructive dialogue. We should discuss how to improve the city’s infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and public services.”
The Delhi Chief Minister accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of running a smear campaign against him and his government. “The BJP has no concrete solutions for Delhi’s problems, so they resort to personal attacks,” he added.
Amit Shah’s Criticism
Amit Shah had recently alleged that the AAP government had delivered nothing, at least in fields like pollution control and water supply. He stated that the Delhi government was playing to the galleries on political issues instead of attending to governance issues. Shah had also criticized Kejriwal on grounds of “poor management of funds” and “inept implementation of schemes” from the center.
Kejriwal Counters
Kejriwal retorted by counting the achievements of his government:
Gurukul: It has renewed government schools with better infrastructure and higher teaching standards.
Health: Mohalla Clinics are providing free medical care to citizens of Delhi.
Electricity and Water: Electricity and free water up to 20,000 liters per household.
Kejriwal further claimed that if the BJP could not match AAP’s governance model, it has a weakness in its psychology for continuously trying to malign AAP.
Political Reactions
The exchange has further heated up the political tussle between AAP and BJP:
AAP: Party leaders have come out in defense of Kejriwal, claiming the BJP was losing focus on development in BJP-governed states and trying to govern Delhi.
BJP: BJP leaders rejected Kejriwal’s statements as an effort to change the subject and insisted on the claims of misgovernance by AAP.
Public Response
Delhians saw mixed reactions emanating from AAP supporters, applauding Kejriwal to focus on issues of governance with BJP supporters finding solace in Shah’s comments on accountability issues.
The verbal bout between Arvind Kejriwal and Amit Shah is a true reflection of intensifying political sparring as New Delhi prepares itself for the battle within the municipal and assembly elections. As time goes by, voters will decide through their ballot which narrative connects more with themselves in the developmental aspirations of their city.
