In an effort to avoid unrest and ensure peace, the Uttar Pradesh government has halted internet services in Bareilly and posted almost 8,000 police officials in the district. This decision has come on the basis of intelligence reports regarding potential disturbances that might endanger law and order.
Internet Services Suspended
Authorities confirmed that mobile internet, broadband, and social media use have been suspended in sensitive locations for the time being. The suspension is meant to check the propagation of rumors, inflammatory messages, and disinformation that would fuel tensions, said the district administration. Authorities further stated that services would resume only when the situation is completely under control.
Heavy Police Deployment
Almost 8,000 security personnel, such as state police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and top officials, have been stationed throughout Bareilly. Religious spots, important checkpoints, and busy bazaars are being closely monitored. Patrolling has been beefed up, and drone surveillance has been added in some locations to ensure nothing untoward is done.
District officials said the precautionary steps were imperative due to the area’s sensitivity and past history of communal tensions.
Efforts to Sustain Peace
Top police officials called on citizens to cooperate with the authorities and not spread unverified messages on social media. Public addresses, peace committee sessions, and talks with local community leaders are being planned to sustain peace and avert panic.
A senior police official made it clear: “We are absolutely on alert. People should not believe rumors. Strict action shall be initiated against those who try to create disharmony.”
Political Responses and People’s Opinions
The move to shut down the internet services has elicited mixed reactions. While the majority of residents have appreciated the move as a preventive measure, others have expressed anxiety over interruption to commerce, online learning, and digital payment.
Opposition political leaders have raised an eyebrow at whether such universal restrictions are a viable solution for re-occurring agitations.
The government has announced the restrictions as preventive and temporary, not punitive. The emphasis, they insisted, was on making sure that law and order reigned supreme in Bareilly. As soon as the situation gets under control, services will be gradually restored.
Bareilly is, meanwhile, under strict security watch, with fingers crossed that citizens and authorities will cooperate to maintain peace in the district.
