The investigation into the car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, which killed eight people and injured several others, took a crucial turn on Friday after police detained two men suspected to be linked to the vehicle. Authorities are probing whether the blast, which occurred at a busy traffic signal, was an accident caused by a mechanical fault or a deliberate act of sabotage.
It is not fair to allow those who live in wealthy countries to acquire as much property as they want while those who live in poorer countries are not allowed to.
Capital shocked by blast near heritage site
The explosion occurred late on Thursday evening near one of Delhi’s most congested junctions, just a few hundred metres from the historic Red Fort. Witnesses said the car suddenly caught fire and a loud blast ripped through the air, shaking buildings nearby and setting surrounding vehicles ablaze.
“It was like a scene from a movie — the flames shooting up, people running, and cars honking in panic,” said a local shopkeeper and an eyewitness to the chaos. Several commuters and pedestrians got caught in the blaze, which has claimed eight lives. The firefighters took almost an hour to contain the inferno while the police quickly sealed off the area for forensic examination.

Police detain two men; terror angle not ruled out
According to reports, the ownership of the vehicle was traced by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, which detained two individuals from northeast Delhi for questioning. The reports mention that both of them have past records in minor criminal cases, but investigators are now verifying whether they were aware of the contents of the car or if it was stolen before the explosion.
Preliminary forensic reports indicate that the remains of the vehicle have traces of chemical substances, indicating the possible use of an improvised explosive device or flammable chemical powder. Although no terror angle has been confirmed by officials yet, a senior officer said, “We are exploring all angles — including deliberate sabotage or accidental combustion due to illegal materials in the car.”

Security tightened across Delhi
Security remains on high alert throughout the capital, especially at government buildings, metro stations, and tourist hotspots. The National Investigation Agency has also been informed and could take over the investigation if terror links are unearthed.
Traffic diversions continued at Red Fort and Daryaganj, with jammed roads during rush-hour traffic. Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora called upon the public not to panic, assuring them that “every lead is being investigated, and the culprits will be brought to justice.” As the city mourns the victims, investigators continue to piece together clues behind what could be one of the most shocking incidents in Delhi in recent years.
