Former US President Donald Trump has again taken credit for stopping a possible war between India and Pakistan. While addressing the media on June 18, Trump stated, “I stopped the war between Pakistan and India. “I love Pakistan. “Modi is a fantastic man.” This comes weeks after tensions escalated between the two nuclear neighbors in May.
Praise for Both Sides
Trump proceeded to also commend Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, stating he did a lot to de-escalate the situation from Pakistan’s end. At the same time, he referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great guy” and “a strong leader” and said that both countries were ready to listen when America intervened.
He also spoke of trade talks, implying economic diplomacy could have saved both nations from the edge.
India Rejects Third-Party Interference
India responded to Trump’s statement with a categorical denial. Prime Minister Modi, during a phone call with officials, explained that the ceasefire resulted from direct military-to-military talks between India and Pakistan, without any third-country interference, not even from the United States.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri repeated this stance, stating that New Delhi does not agree to foreign mediation of bilateral issues and that the assertions made by Trump were false.
Narratives of Tension
As Trump saw himself as the peacemaker, India has acted differently regarding the situation. There was emphasis put on the fact that Indian troops moved on their own accord and that the ceasefire was a result of direct talks with Pakistan’s military command and not thanks to U.S. intervention.
Trump did continue to maintain, however, that his action had resulted in a stop to the nuclear deal. “Nobody gave me credit, but I got it stopped,” he said.
The Bigger Picture
Trump’s remarks have again caused diplomatic debate, especially as India is about to enter its next government term and the U.S. is preparing for its own elections. His simultaneous complimenting of both India and Pakistan can be interpreted as a balancing act of relationships in a politically volatile area.
