Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday launched the Mukhya Mantrir Eti Koli Duti Paat Scheme at Doomdooma in Tinsukia district, marking a major welfare initiative for tea garden workers. Under the scheme, over Rs. 300 crore will be disbursed as a one-time assistance of Rs. 5,000 each to more than six lakh tea garden workers.
8. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla apprised the House of the successful conduct of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) 2026. He mentioned that the 28th CSPOC, which was organised from 14th to 16th of January was a grand success. This conference was held in India after a gap of 16 years.
9. NITI Aayog has started a fresh nationwide push called Sampoornata Abhiyan 2.0 to improve basic services in India’s most underdeveloped districts and blocks. The campaign begins on January 28, 2026, and will run for three months. It focuses on health, nutrition, sanitation, education and animal vaccination.
10. Karnataka has emerged as the undisputed hub of India’s generative artificial intelligence revolution, hosting 39 per cent of the country’s GenAI startups, according to the Economic Survey 2025–26. The milestone reflects the state’s deepening role in India’s fast-expanding technology startup ecosystem, now ranked the third-largest globally.

1. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant announced a series of technology-driven administrative initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in the judiciary and reducing pendency of cases. CJI launched a digital partnership with various high courts on Thursday.
2. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Ajit Pawar Aircraft Accident case: Investigation Bureau has launched a probe to ascertain the cause of the mishap. The Civil Aviation Ministry today informed that the black box of the ill-fated aircraft has been recovered.
3. The Supreme Court today ordered that the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, be kept in abeyance. The Court expressed certain reservations about the Regulations, which are being challenged by as discriminatory towards general category. The Court suggested that the Regulations must be revisited by a committee comprising eminent jurists.
4. The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, be kept in abeyance.
5. The Delhi High Court has clarified that freedom of speech, though a fundamental right, is not unlimited and cannot be used to justify defamatory or abusive campaigns against individuals or organisations. The Court said that the Constitution itself places reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2), and the right to free expression does not cover speech that is defamatory, malicious or intended to harm the reputation and dignity of others.
6. Amid growing controversy over a proposal to reduce the notified boundary of Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivamogga district, Karnataka Forest Minister Shri Eshwar Khandre visited the sanctuary to assess the situation on the ground. The visit comes as debates intensify between the state government and conservationists over legal, ecological and livelihood concerns linked to the sanctuary’s extent.
