The Centre has informed Supreme Court that the Census Act, 1948 empowers only the Union government to conduct the census. In the affidavit filed before the court, the Centre said that it is committed to taking all affirmative actions for the uplift of SCs, STs, OBCs and Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBCs) in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India and the applicable law.

12. MIZORAM, an 18-member strong team of the Election Commission of India (ECI) led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar arrived in Aizawl for a three-day visit. The team’s visit is significant in view of the Assembly Election to be held later this year.

13. The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday, while hearing the Article 370 case, asked the Centre to indicate if there is a time frame to restore the statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, told the bench the Union territory status of Jammu and Kashmir is not a ”permanent thing” and that the government will make an elaborate statement on the vexatious political issue in the court on August 31.

14. 22 colleges in Meghalaya boycott classes over NEP 2020: Even after 45 days into the new academic session, at least 22 of the 75 colleges affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya are yet to shift to the 4-year undergraduate course with the teachers’ union actively protesting the university’s push for the course.

15.. Kannada groups and activists have welcomed the Congress government’s decision to make the language compulsory in madrassas. There are 1,265 registered Madrassas under the Wakf board. The department is preparing to teach Kannada language for 5,000 children of 100 madrassas.

16. TELANGANA: Applicants, who lodge complaints with TS Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TS-RERA) will no longer have to visit RERA office in Hyderabad for participating in the case hearing and they can do it virtually from their respective places.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday visited the venue of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA)’s upcoming meeting in Mumbai and took stock of preparations for the conclave of opposition leaders. Will gather in a luxury hotel in suburban Mumbai on 31 August and 01 September .

18. MANIPUR: one-day session of the Manipur Assembly was adjourned sine die within an hour of commencement after Congress MLAs created a ruckus demanding that the session be extended to five days.

All the 10 Kuki MLAs, including seven from the Bharatiya Janata Party, were absent from the House.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated the “Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan” edition 2, a state-level event, this evening and disbursed over Rs 5.94 crore to 1,807 sportspersons from Punjab, who had won awards at state, national and international levels since 2017 to 2022. The money was transferred into their accounts.

1. An official of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was arrested on Monday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly taking bribes amounting to Rs 5 crore from businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall, an accused in the Delhi excise policy case. Pawan Khatri, who worked as an Assistant Director in the ED, was one of the two officials against whom the probe agency had filed a complaint over the bribery charges.

2. NHRC has issued notice to Uttar Pradesh government over the reported beating of a student by his classmates at the behest of his teacher in Muzaffarnagar.

NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a teacher of a private school, referring to the faith of one of her students in an absurd manner, ordered his classmates to beat him. The school is located at Khubbapur village in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The boy’s family has alleged that he was beaten up for a mistake in the multiplication of tables during class.

3. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two wanted absconding accused, including the kingpin, in the 2022 case relating to seizure of explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices material from Rajasthan.

According to the NIA, both the accused Mohammad Yunus Saki and Imran Khan were produced before the NIA Special Court in Jaipur.

4. The National Investigation Agency has filed a supplementary charge sheet against two members of an Assam-based module of an Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group conspiring to spread terror and violence in the country, officials said Tuesday. The supplementary charge sheet has been filed against Akbar Ali and Abul Kalam Azad who were arrested on April 5.

5. A private tutor who allegedly posed as a scientist with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and gave interviews to the media in Surat claiming he designed the lander module for the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission was arrested in Surat on Tuesday,

1. The Government of India is considering increasing the retirement age of Managing Directors (MDs) and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of public sector banks by two years.

The retirement age of the chairman of State Bank of India (SBI) may also increase from 63 to 65. The move will benefit the current SBI chairman Dinesh Khara, who will turn 63 next year. Khara is yet to get an extension as his 3-year term ends in October.

2. Nepal’s truck transporters on Monday demanded a ban on Indian cargo vehicles’ entry into the Himalayan nation, citing concerns about the growing adverse impact of unhealthy competition on domestic cargo businesses.

3. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that the government has decided to reduce the price of domestic LPG cylinders by 200 rupees for all the consumers, the benefit now stands at 400 rupees per LPG cylinder for the Ujjawala beneficiaries. He said government will provide 75 lakh new free LPG connections under Ujjwala scheme.

1. Thirty-four countries including India and US to participate in joint military exercise, BRIGHT STAR-23, begining Thursday in Egypt.

Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23, (AIR FORCE) scheduled at Cairo (West) Air Base, Egypt, from 27 August to September 16, 2023, is set to witness a riveting face-off between India’s MiG-29s and Pakistan’s JF-17 ‘Thunder’ jets. This clash of titans marks a unique angle in the multilateral tri-service exercise.

2. An Indian Army contingent will be a part of multinational tri-services joint military exercise ‘BRIGHT STAR- 23’ in the Middle East. This military exercise will take place in Egypt and is scheduled to be conducted from 31 August to 14 September at Mohammed Naguib Military Base.

3. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s leading aerospace company, will phase out the percentage of imported components for the TEJAS MK-1A, including the replacement of the radar cone and in-flight refuelling probe manufactured by British companies.

The recent announcement that the Indian Air Force (IAF) is considering placing an additional order for between 90 and 100 new TEJAS MK-1A fighters.
