1. National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

2. Goa Cabinet reshuffle: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant Wednesday allocated portfolios to Digambar Kamat and Ramesh Tawadkar, days after they were inducted into the Cabinet. While Kamat, who served as the chief minister of Goa from 2007 to 2012 during the last Congress government in the state, has been allocated the portfolios of public works department (PWD), captain of ports, and legal metrology, former speaker Tawadkar has been allocated tribal welfare, Art and Culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs.

3. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia chaired a high-level review meeting on the restoration of mobile connectivity in flood-affected regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.

4. To ensure the availability of textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to the children of troops stationed in remote areas, an MoU was signed between the NCERT and the Army Postal Service Corps, under the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.

5. The Government has decided to extend the import duty exemption on raw cotton from 30th September to 31st December 2025. The decision has been taken to augment availability of cotton for the Indian textile sector.

6. Kerala’s Onam celebrations began with the vibrant Athachamayam procession in Tripunithura, drawing thousands of spectators under sunny skies.

7. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel jointly inaugurated the pilot plant of the first semiconductor outsourced assembly and testing facility of CG Semi Private Limited in Sanand, near Ahmedabad.

8. Northern Railways on Thursday operated a special unreserved train from Jammu to New Delhi to assist stranded passengers, including tourists and Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, after heavy rains disrupted train services in the region.

9. India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand today.

LEGAL REPORT

1. A Delhi court on Wednesday cancelled the non-bailable warrant against former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) officer Vikash Yadav, two days after it was issued. Yadav was named by the United States in an alleged “murder-for-hire” plot and money laundering case, targeting New York-based Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

2. The Madras High Court on Thursday (August 28, 2025) directed the Director General of Police/Head of Police Force (DGP/HoPF) and the Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police (GCCP) to inform all police stations under their jurisdiction about a Government Order (G.O.) issued on 8 May 2025, which permits shops and other establishments employing more than 10 people to remain open 24×7 throughout the year.

3. The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday rejected the application moved by Asaram Bapu, who has been sentenced to life in a 2013-rape case, seeking extension of his interim bail on medical grounds.A division bench of Justice Dinesh Mehta and Justice Vinit Kumar Mathur reportedly took note of the self-styled godman’s medical record and found that he is stable.

4. The Supreme Court of India recently examined the discretionary powers of Governors under Article 200 of the Constitution. This followed concerns about Governors delaying assent to crucial State Bills for years. The Court questioned why judicial review applies to Governors’ reports under Article 356 for President’s Rule but not to their actions under Article 200. This has sparked debate on the balance of powers between the judiciary, Governors, and the Centre.

5. Dismissing all speculation that “anyone should retire at the age of 75″, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Thursday that he had never said that he would or someone should quit at that age. Both Bhagwat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi turn 75 next month.

6. Kusumavati, mother of Sowjanya, a girl allegedly raped and murdered more than a decade ago, on Thursday submitted a fresh complaint to the SIT probing allegations of multiple rapes, murders and burials in Dharmasthala over the past two decades.

Sowjanya, a 17-year-old college student, was allegedly raped and murdered on October 9, 2012, in Dharmasthala, a case that remains unresolved even more than a decade later.

In Maharashtra, at least 17 people have been killed and 9 others injured after a four-storey building collapsed last night in Virar East, Mumbai. Rescue operations by the NDRF, police, and fire brigade are still underway, with 24 people rescued so far.

3. India marked milestone in green mobility with the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, and a lithium-ion battery production facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event, denoting India’s growing role in sustainable transportation and the Make in India initiative. The e-VITARA will be manufactured domestically and exported to over 100 countries.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

1. Actor Prabhas’s film, The Raja Saab, has been postponed from its original release date of 5 December 2025. The makers of the movie have officially announced that it will now be hitting screens on 9 January 2026.

2. War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, has grossed ₹343.75 crore globally in 12 days, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.

3. Movie ‘Mahavtar Narsimha’ is creating history as for an animation film to continue its run at the box office for more than a month. The film doesn’t have any big stars but this film backs strongly on religious sentiments and the stunning use of VFX and visuals along with the dialogues. The film has continued to stand tall amidst the wave of ‘Saiyaara’ and even stood strong when two big movies like ‘War 2’ and ‘Coolie’ released.

The collection is much higher now than ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ and ‘Housefull 5’ which had made Rs 167.3 crore (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu combined) and Rs 183.3 crore respectively. Even if we just calculate the Hindi collection of ‘Mahavtar Narsimha’, it is Rs 179 crore and that’s still higher than ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’.

Directed by Ashwin Kumar, the film will now face fresh competition with the release of ‘Param Sundari’ this weekend.

DEFENCE News

1. Indian Naval Ships Tamal, a newly commissioned multi-role frigate, and Surat, a guided missile destroyer, arrived at Jeddah Islamic Port on August 27-28, 2025, as part of ongoing naval exchanges between India and Saudi Arabia.

2. The Indian Army on Thursday deployed its advanced ATOR N1200 Specialist Mobility Vehicle (SMV) as part of its rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of Amritsar.

The ATOR N1200 (ATV) is an advanced amphibious all-terrain vehicle which was recently inducted by the Indian Army. The vehicle is designed for extreme mobility across challenging environments such as dense forests, swamps, snowfields, deserts and rivers.

3. The Defence Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Quality Council of India in New Delhi to strengthen the delivery of pension, healthcare, resettlement, and welfare services for over 63 lakh veterans and their dependents.

4. On the sidelines of the ongoing annual Chiefs of Defence Conference (CHODs) 2025 conference in Thailand, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) of India, held a series of meetings with senior defence officials from Vietnam, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Air Marshal Dixit met Lt Gen Thai Dai Ngoc, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Vietnam People’s Army.

5. The Indian Army, as part of its Decade of Transformation, has launched the Terrier Cyber Quest 2025. This national-level challenge aims to tackle real defence and cybersecurity threats. The event is held in New Delhi with collaboration from IIT Madras, the Indian Army Research Cell (IARC), and CyberPeace. It invites India’s brightest minds from academia, industry, and government to innovate in critical technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Quantum Computing, and Drone Technology.
