1. India is all set to celebrate its 75th Republic Day on 26 January 2024.

Facts about Republic Day.

(a) Republic Day in India to commemorate the day when India officially became a republic in 1950.

(b) Every year, many across the country remain confused about who will unfurl the flag on this special day. To set it straight, Prime Minister will not unfurl the national flag on Republic Day. It will be the President.

(d) On Independence Day, the prime minister hoists the flag from the bottom of the pole at Red Fort. It symbolises India’s emergence from colonial clutches.

(e) Republic Day involves the President unfurling the flag, already at the peak with flowers tied to it. This act signifies that India, having already gained independence, celebrates its established freedom and the enactment of its Constitution.

(f)Why it will be celebrate on 26 Jan? Because In 1930, the Indian National Congress started observing 26 January as India’s Independence Day to honour India’s freedom fighters.

When India’s Constitution was set to be officially adopted in 1950, this date was chosen to remember the 1930 call for ‘Purna Swaraj’ or complete independence. On 26 January 1950, India officially became a republic.

(g) On Independence Day, the prime minister raises the national flag at Red Fort. However, Republic Day starts with the President of India unfurling the flag at Kartavya Path, earlier called Rajpath and originally named Kingsway.

2. President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday approved 80 gallantry awards including six Kirti Chakra and 16 Shaurya Chakra on the eve of the 75th Republic Day.

3. The home ministry on Thursday announced the Padma awards which included five Padma Bhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri.

4. India’s first woman elephant mahout Parbati Baruah famous as Hasti Kanya, tribal environmentalist Chami Murmu, social worker Sangthankima who runs Mizoram’s largest orphanage and plastic surgeon Prema Dhanraj who treats burn victims are among 34 “unsung heroes” awarded Padma Shri on Thursday.

5. Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, megastar Konidela Chiranjeevi, famous actor of yesteryears Vyjayantimala Bali are among personalities who have been honoured with Padma Vibhushan in the awards announced by the government on Thursday on the eve of 75th Republic Day.

6. The national capital Delhi will be placed under a blanket of security for the Republic Day celebrations, with more than 70,000 personnel being deployed across the city for the purpose, Out of over 70,000 personnel, 14,000 will be deployed at and around Kartavya Path for the security of the Republic Day parade.

7. The Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Tableau participating in this year’s Republic Day parade will showcase the Chandrayaan-3 as its primary highlight.The tableau features the launch of Chandrayaan-3 and its successful landing on the south pole of the moon. It also highlights the landing point, which was named Shiv Shakti Point.

8. Nine remote villages located in the Maoist-hit Bastar region of Chhattisgarh will be witnessing a historic moment on Republic Day on Friday when the tricolour will be unfurled there for the first time in 76 years, indicating the waning influence of rebels and improvement in security scenario.

9. The former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Thursday rejoined BJP, he had quit the party in April 2023 and joined the Congress ahead of state polls after the party denied him a ticket from Hubbali-Dharwad.

10. According to media reports, BJP sources as saying on Thursday that the saffron party has set a condition for the JD(U) chief if he wants to return to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). And that condition is that Nitish Kumar must quit as the chief minister.

11. On the eve of the 75th Republic Day, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched E-Bus Services for Jammu Smart City, through virtual mode.

12. Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Arjun Munda has said that farmers have the ability to build themselves and the nation into a self-dependent entity.

13. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan felicitated Veer Gatha 3.0 winners in New Delhi. A total of 100 school students called ‘Super-100’ received the awards in different categories.

14. Union Tourism and Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the newly created sound and light show of the historic Golconda Fort in Hyderabad.

16. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dedicate the 173 km-long double-line electrified section between New Khurja and New Rewari on the Dedicated Freight Corridor to the nation by flagging off goods trains from the two stations through video conferencing.

17. Minister of External Affairs Joint Secretary Anil Kumar Rai appointed as India’s next ambassador to Ethiopia.

18. Republic Day Lalbagh Flower Show, which has been on display since last Thursday (January 18), will conclude on Sunday, January 28. This year, the 11-day event is based on the theme of Lord Basaveshwara, the Lingayat philosopher, poet and social reformer.

1. 4. In Jammu and Kashmir, security has been tightened ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. Army and BSF have intensified surveillance along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB), and the police and CRPF have been guarding vulnerable areas in the hinterland.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRQO) has issued a notice to French journalist Vanessa Dougnac, based in New Delhi, asking her to explain why her Overseas Citizen of India card should not be withdrawn. FRRO, which operates under the Union home ministry, termed her journalistic work as malicious and allegedly creating a negative perception of India.

1. Indian private banks expect growth in loans to sustain in the “high teens” over the next fiscal year despite a struggle to raise deposits and tougher capital requirements imposed by the central bank.
In November, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the capital requirements for personal loans, credit cards and for lending to non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) but banks have chosen to absorb the higher capital requirements rather than slow loan growth.

2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked Dhanlaxmi Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Shivan J K to continue in office till the successor assumes office.

The term of the existing CEO Shivan J K is set to end on 29 January 2024.

1. *INDIA SET TO EXPORT BRAHMOS SUPERSONIC CRUISE MISSILES:* The DRDO chairman said the first set of missile systems is expected to reach the Philippines by the end of March. The venture, valued at USD 375 million, marks DRDO’s largest-ever defence contract with a foreign nation.

2. The Indian Armed Forces, especially on the northern and western borders with China and Pakistan, respectively, have enhanced the deployment of advanced weapons systems to tackle any kind of threat at the frontier.India is set to acquire 300 units of ATAGS howitzers to enhance the operational readiness of its forces in the frontier regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

3. The Indian Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, held a video call interaction with the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) head, Admiral John C Aquilino, and discussed bilateral defence cooperation and contemporary security challenges.

4. The Indian Navy and the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) on Wednesday carried out a successful engagement of a land target at enhanced range with an advanced supersonic cruise missile. The test was likely for the 800 km extended range version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

5. On Republic Day, the DRDO tableau will showcase an array of advanced defence technologies, featuring the man-portable anti-tank guided missile, anti-satellite missile, Agni-5 ballistic missile, very short-range air defence system, naval anti-ship missile, and anti-tank guided missile ‘HELINA’. The presentation will also include the quick reaction surface-to-air missile Astra, light combat aircraft ‘Tejas’.

6. Major Srishti Khullar — an eye surgeon, ophthalmologist from the Army Medical Corps and qualified paratrooper — will lead the first-ever all-women contingent from the Armed Forces Medical Services at the Republic Day parade.

7. President Droupadi Murmu has approved Gallantry awards to 80 Armed Forces personnel, including 12 posthumous, on the eve of the 75th Republic Day.

8. The Indian Army on Wednesday threw open the ‘India Selfie Point’ near the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The ‘India Selfie Point’ has been gifted by acclaimed artist Rouble Nagi, who has set up several such points elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir.
