1. President Ram Nath Kovind addresses Nation on eve of 73rd Republic Day; Also hails India’s COVID-19 vaccination drive.

2. The Republic Day celebrations commenced on January 23, the birth anniversary of great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and will culminate on January 30, which is observed as Martyrs’ Day.

3. Nation to celebrate 73rd RepublicDay today. As per tradition, National Flag will be unfurled followed by National Anthem with a booming 21-gun salute. Parade will commence with President taking salute. This year Parade to begin at 10.30 AM instead of scheduled time of 10 AM.

4. On Republic Day Eve, President Ram Nath Kovind approved the conferment of the Jeevan Rakshak Padak Series of Awards to as many as 51 citizens. The awards include Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to six people, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 16 persons and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 29 persons. Five persons were given the award posthumously.

5. India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 163 crore 49 lakh mark. Union Health Ministry said, over 93 crore 24 lakh vaccine doses have been administered as first dose and more than 69 crore 31 lakh vaccine doses given as second doses

6. Twenty-nine officials of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were awarded President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day eve. Joint Director Ramnish Geer is among the officials awarded President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Also, 29 officials of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs were awarded President’s Award.

7. Congress leader and former Union Minister RPN Singh today joined the BJP. He was inducted into the party in the presence of Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Anurag Thakur and UP Deputy Chief Ministers Dinesh Sharma and Keshav Prasad Maurya at BJP Headquarters in New Delhi.

8. DELHI: CM Arvind Kejriwal will hoist 115-foot-high national flag at 75 places in the national capital on January 27. Giving this information on Twitter, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said this was being done to mark the 75 years of Independence.

J&K : Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha announced 15% reservation for women in non-gazetted posts in the Jammu & Kashmir Police on the occasion of National Girl Child Day on Monday. “J&K Government is committed to ensure social and economic empowerment of women,” LG Sinha said. The decision will help in tackling gender-based crimes.

10. HARYANA: govt announced that schools for classes 10 to 12 will reopen from February 1. State Education Minister Kanwar Pal said online classes will also be continued but those who want to come to school may attend the classes there.

11. UTTAR PRADESH, the State Election Commission has made it mandatory for all political parties to seek permission for campaigning through video vans or digital video vans. Expenditure on the video vans will be added to the party’s election expenses which has to be produced before the Election Commission once the elections are over.

12. Punjab and Haryana: High Court stayed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia for three days to enable him to approach the Supreme Court to challenge an earlier order of the court dismissing his anticipatory bail plea in the alleged drugs case.

14. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday released its latest world economic outlook growth projections and cut India’s FY22 economic growth forecast to 9% from 9.5%. It put the growth forecast for India for 2022-23 at 9% and 7.1% in 2022-24. IMF’s 2022 global growth projection is 4.4%, lower than previously forecasted.

15. Branches of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank Ltd (PMC Bank) will operate as Unity Small Finance Bank Ltd (USFBL) branches from Tuesday, RBI said in a press release. RBI added that USFBL is making all necessary arrangements to implement provisions of the merger. The bank’s amalgamation scheme envisages takeover of the assets and liabilities of PMC Bank.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech’s Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella and Covishield maker Serum Institute’s Founder Cyrus Poonawalla are among Padma Bhushan awardees in the business field for 2022. Padma Shri awardees are Jagjit Singh Dardi, Muktamani Devi, Japan’s Ryuko Hira and Rupa & Co’s Prahlad Rai Agarwala.

18. On the eve of Republic Day, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat has been awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously. General Rawat passed away last year after the IAF helicopter he was travelling in crashed in Tamil Nadu.

19. The armed forces have received the first batch of 70,000 rifles from Russia as part of a larger contract to manufacture the AK 203 assault rifles in India. The initial batch has been delivered at a fast pace as requested by India, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

20. India and Philippines are likely to sign a $374.9 million deal this week (28 Jan) for the supply of “multiple” BrahMos shore-based supersonic cruise missile systems as part of Manila’s plan to beef up its defence amid territorial conflict with China.

21. Kamov choppers, submarine torpedoes among deals defence ministry will review this week from Russia.
Ministry is reviewing all procurement under the ‘Buy (Global)’ category, under which equipment is bought directly from foreign manufacturers, amid govt’s ‘Atmanirbhar’ push.

22. Chennai-based vertically integrated defence and aerospace electronics solutions provider Data Patterns (India) has received a development order for Rs 27 crore from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the next generation wideband RF front end units for Electronic Warfare (EW) receivers.
