1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal today. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Mizoram, Tripura, Gujarat, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during the next two days.

2. PM Modi will share his thoughts with the people of the country and abroad in the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Akashvani at 11 AM today. It will be the 113th episode of the monthly radio programme.

3. PM Modi will visit Jalgaon in Maharashtra and Jodhpur in Rajasthan today to participate in the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has installed cloth bag vending machines-similar to ATMs-at all the prominent temples across the state providing devotees with easy access to reusable cloth bags. Similarly, reverse vending machines for plastic bottles, have been installed at seven major ST bus stands and one railway station, which have already recycled over 9,500 bottles in just two months. Currently, 14 machines have been installed at prominent temples in the state including Ambaji, Somnath, ISKCON.

5. The Cabinet approved the continuation of three umbrella schemes, which have been merged into a unified central sector scheme named Vigyan Dhara, with an outlay of 10,579 crore rupees. This scheme comprises three broad components- Science and Technology Institutional and Human Capacity Building, Research and Development, and Innovation, Technology Development, and Deployment.

6. PM Modi will visit Jodhpur in Rajasthan today evening. He will be the Chief Guest at the concluding ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court.

7. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal, has said that his ministry is committed to strengthen seafarers’ security, safety, welfare, and development. Addressing senior officers and young cadets at the Maritime Training Institute (MTI), Powai.

8. Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has asked telecom service providers to take all necessary measures to ensure that citizens get good-quality telecom services. 9. India’s first reusable hybrid rocket Rhumi-1 was launched from Chennai by Space Zone India, in collaboration with martin group. The rocket was launched using a mobile trajectory while carrying a payload of 50 pico satellites and three cube satellites. The sounding rocket flew at an altitude of about 35 kms and returned to earth after conducting several experiments.
Dr. M. Annadurai, former Director of ISRO Space Centre led the expedition.

10. The government and private schools in Hyderabad went into a cautionary mode asking the parents of the students to exercise additional care of their children if anyone develops high fever coupled with cold and cough.

11. The Odisha government has decided to include around one crore women, aged between 21 to 60 years, under the Subhadra Yojana, which was one of the major poll promises of the BJP. Disburse Rs 10,000 in two instalments in 2024-25.

All women, who have ration cards and none of their family members is a government employee or has a four-wheeler or land more than five acres, or a government pensioner or receiving Rs 1,500 a month (or Rs 18,000 a year) under any other scheme, will be eligible for the scheme.

12. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has rolled out a scheme under which around 200 city women will be trained to operate a drone and be given a drone pilot licence certificate, Under the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme, a total of Rs 25,000 will be spent on each trainee and funds will be raised through Corporate Social Responsibility.

13. The People’s Democratic Party will extend complete support to the Congress-NC alliance and leave all seats in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections to the coalition if it is ready to accept the party’s agenda, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said on Saturday.

14. Haryana unit of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has written to the Election Commission requesting a brief postponement of the Assembly polls slated for October 1, citing holidays before and after the election date that could lead to lower voter turnout.

1. In Assam, the main accused in the rape of a minor girl at Dhing, died early this morning. The incident occurred during a re-creation of the crime scene at the wee hours today. The accused, Tafazul Islam, who had been arrested by police managed to flee and jumped into the pond that led to his death. Police later recovered his body with the help of SDRF team. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that persons, involved in the crime, will not be spared.

2. In West Bengal, the Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR in the financial irregularities case against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Ghosh is currently being interrogated in Kolkata, and a polygraph test is underway.

A Special Court of Sessions for Criminal Cases against former and present MPs and MLAs has issued a show-cause notice to the investigation officer (IO) of the Lokayukta police for not conducting a fresh preliminary inquiry against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in an alleged bribery case despite a direction issued by the court in this regard way back in February.

1. The trainer aircraft that disappeared after taking off from Jamshedpur remains missing despite ongoing search efforts in Chandil dam. The bodies of the pilot and trainee were recovered and handed over to their families. An Indian Navy team is still searching the dam’s reservoir for the aircraft’s wreckage.

2. A private helicopter flying from Mumbai to Hyderabad crashed in Mulshi tehsil of Pune district on Saturday afternoon but all four persons on board survived. Bad weather was suspected to have caused the crash as the area is receiving heavy rains. The chopper, belonging to Global Vectra aviation company, crashed at Kondhwale village around 2 pm.

1. The Union Cabinet has approved the Unified Pension Scheme for government employees, which provides for an assured pension. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the first pillar of the scheme ensures 50% of the average basic pay drawn over the last twelve months prior to superannuation for a minimum qualifying service of 25 years. The second pillar guarantees that 60% of the pension is assured for the family after the employee’s demise. 23 lakh central government employees would benefit from this scheme.

2. The Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that MSMEs contribute to nation-building by providing vital supply chains to large industries and employment to millions of people. Addressing the 10th India International MSME Startup Expo and Summit in New Delhi.

3. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided that dairy products like milk, ghee, butter, and curd should no longer be labeled as “A1” or “A2.” These labels, according to FSSAI, can be misleading for consumers. Companies that currently have products with these labels are given six months to sell off their existing stock before the labels must be removed.

4. Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd (TPSSL) has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank to provide financing for solar units to residential and corporate customers. As part of the agreement, the customers can avail themselves of loans up to Rs 90 lakh with collateral-free options and tenure extending up to 5 years.

6. The RBI has revised its e-mandate framework to exempt auto-replenishment of FASTag and NCMC balances from the 24-hour pre-debit notification requirement. This change aims to simplify the process for recurring transactions that are irregular in timing.

7. Bandhan Bank launched Avni, a savings account for women, on 22 August 2024.

8. Manila ranked first with a 26 per cent annual rise during the quarter. Mumbai and Delhi are at the second and third positions, respectively, among 44 cities globally in annual price rise of prime residential properties during the June quarter.

1. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA) demolished Telugu superstar Nagarjuna owned N-Convention centre in Madhapur for allegedly being constructed on encroached land on the Full Tank Level of the Tummidikunta lake. N-Convention is managed by N3 Enterprises and jointly owned by actor-cum-producer Nagarjuna and Nalla Preetham.

While the actor took to his social media account to issue a statement against this “unlawful” demolition, Telangana High Court accepted the appeal of the owners and provided an interim relief by putting a stay on the demolition “for now”.

2. In a remarkable achievement, Velayudham Srinivasulu, a distinguished artisan from Srikalahasti, Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, has been selected to represent India on the global stage. He will showcase the exquisite Kalamkari art at the closing ceremony of the Paris Paralympics, scheduled from September 5th to 9th.

1. India, Sri Lanka joint military exercise MITRA SHAKTI concludes with final drills in Sri Lanka. 10th edition of India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise MITRA SHAKTI took placeat Army Training School, Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. This 14-day exercise concludes on August 25th.

2. The Indian Navy’s warship, INS Mumbai, will arrive in Colombo on 26 August 2024, for a three-day visit. The Sri Lanka Navy will ceremonially receive the ship.

INS Mumbai, commissioned into the Indian Navy on 22 January 2001, is the third of the Delhi-class destroyers and was built at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai.

The ship recently completed a mid-life upgrade and rejoined the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam on 8 December 2023. This marks INS Mumbai’s first visit to a Sri Lankan port and the eighth visit by an Indian Navy ship to Sri Lanka in 2024.

3. INS Mumbai will conduct joint activities with the Sri Lanka Navy, including sports events, yoga sessions, and a beach cleaning initiative. The visit is categorised as an Operational Turnaround (OTR), during which the ship will replenish fuel and provisions. The crew will also have the opportunity to visit local sites in Colombo and Galle. INS Mumbai is scheduled to depart Sri Lanka on 29 August 2024.

4. The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has approved a foreign military sale of anti-submarine warfare sonobuoys and related equipment to India, at an estimated cost of 52.8 million US Dollars for the multi-mission MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification.

India has purchased 24 MH-60R choppers from the USA and received six of them so far. The sonobuoys will be a key equipment for the all-weather helicopters known as submarine hunters.

5. On a two-day visit to Manipur, Indian Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi met Chief Minister N Biren Singh and held discussions on how the forces can help in bringing peace and stability in the state, which has seen ethnic violence in recent times. On arrival, the army chief was briefed on the operational preparedness by commanders on the ground.

6. The Indian Army and the Maharashtra Police’s Force One, a specialised commando force, conducted a joint exercise to synergise their operating methods and enhance operational readiness (18 Aug to 22 Aug).

Force One was formed after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai to carry out specialised urban-centric terrorist operations. The primary area of responsibility of Force One is Mumbai and its surrounding regions. The Army’s 15 Assam Regiment has covered various operational aspects, including building and hostage interventions

7. BORDER TENSE AS BANGLADESH GUARDS STOP INDIA FROM BUILDING FENCE: Personnel of the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) stopped Border Security Force (BSF) officers from building a cattle fence near the India-Bangladesh border in Coochbehar, north Bengal on Thursday evening, further straining relations between the two countries amidst the political turmoil in Dhaka.

8. The Indian Army held the Agniveer Recruitment Rally at Upendranath Brahma Football Stadium in Udalguri, Assam, from August 16 to August 23. This event aimed to recruit youth from Northeastern states, especially Lower Assam districts, to serve as Agniveers.
