Ramadan 2023 : Crescent moon sighted in India, fasting begins today.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is celebrated by Muslims with fervor and grandeur as the 30-day festival is marked by hope and spiritual growth. During this period, Muslims pray, reflect, fast, and let go of worldly pleasures.

1. Vice President and Chairman Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday paid tribute to Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on the occasion of Shaheed Diwas.

2. Indian Muslims to observe Ramzan fast from March 24. The Markazi-Royat-e-Hilal Committee, Jama Masjid, has decided that the first fast of Ramzan will be observed on Friday, March 24.

3. PM Modi to visit his parliamentary constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh today. During his one-day visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the One World TB Summit at Rudrakash Convention Centre in his parliamentary constituency Kashi on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day (24 Mar).

4. PM Modi to dedicate & lay foundation stone of various projects worth more than Rs. 1780 crores at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University ground.

15. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has decided to implement ‘dynamic pricing’ model on pilot basis for 46 services to Bengaluru from Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam. The model will be implemented from March 27 and will allow ticket prices to fluctuate based on passenger demand and other factors.

16. Telangana CM K. Chandrashekar Rao, who conducted an aerial survey of the four rain-affected districts of the state on Thursday, announced Rs 10,000 per acre financial assistance to farmers whose crops were damaged by unseasonal rains and hailstorms last week.

CRIME REPORT

1. Supreme Court to hear the plea challenging the renaming of Aurangabad to ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’.

2. Supreme Court to hear appeal of Gujarat government & bail pleas of several accused who are serving life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train burning case.

3. National Investigation Agency on Thursday carried out searches and raids at the residences of eight suspects in the ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind’ case of July 2022. The search operation, spread across three states, included four locations in Maharashtra’s Nagpur.

4. Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh was seen on CCTV camera leaving the home of a woman in Haryana who had sheltered him, on Monday. The footage shows Amritpal carrying an umbrella to hide his face. Baljeet Kaur, the woman who sheltered Amritpal Singh and his aide Papalpreet Singh at her house in Haryana’s Kurukshetra, has been arrested.

5. Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh focussed on young drug addicts and disgruntled ex-servicemen to help him develop a gang that could become a terrorist organisation, officials said on Thursday. Singh focussed on ex-servicemen so that they could impart training on how to handle weapons.

Punjab Police on Thursday discovered that Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh made a firing range near his village in Amritsar’s Jallupur Khera. Police also found pictures of Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF), a militia allegedly being formed by him.

6. Narcotics worth ₹405.4 crore have been seized by police and Assam Rifles in two separate operations in Mizoram and Assam and two suspected drug peddlers have been arrested.

7. Political temperatures soared after a Surat court on Thursday held Congress MP Rahul Gandhi guilty in a 2019 defamation case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. The court, however, approved Mr Gandhi’s bail and stayed his arrest for 30 days to allow him to appeal. The sentencing order also triggered a debate over the possibility of Mr Gandhi being disqualified as an MP.

8. Supreme Court on Thursday said that it will set up a new 5-judge Constitution bench to hear pleas challenging the constitutional validity of polygamy and Nikah halala prevailing among the Muslims.

1. US central bank has raised interest rates again, despite fears that the move could add to financial turmoil after a string of recent bank failures. The Federal Reserve increased its key rate by 0.25 percentage points and said more action could be appropriate as consumer prices continue to climb.

2. Center’s intervention against substandard items has led to a 67% decline in imports of Toys.

Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry on Thursday said that the volume of import of toys into the Indian market has shown a consistently decreasing trend. The import of Toys to India has decreased from 332.55 million dollars in 2014-15 to 109.72 million dollars in 2021-22.

3. Hindenburg has targeted about 30 companies since 2020 and their shares fell 15% on average the next day after the report came out, Bloomberg News reported. The report added that six months after Hindenberg posted its report, the firms’ shares went down 26% on average.

4. Canara Bank said it has sold its stake in Russian joint venture Commercial Indo Bank LLC (CIBL) to the other venture partner State Bank of India (SBI) for about ₹121.29 crore.

DEFENCE

1.Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) have launched the second ship ‘Androth’, of the eight antisubmarine warfare-shallow water craft (ASW-SWC) vessel ordered by the Indian Navy in 2019.

This ship belongs to the Arnala class shallow watercraft (SWC), which will replace older Abhay class corvettes of the Indian Navy.

2. Made-In-India Radars Ordered For Indian Air Force in Rs 3,700 Crore Deal With BEL. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for buying Arudhra radar and DR-118 RWR worth Rs 3,700 Crore for Indian Air Force (IAF).

3. Konkan 2023, a joint maritime exercise, was conducted between the Royal Navy of Britain and the Indian Navy from the 20th of March to the 22nd, off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea.

4. Bengaluru based Air Force Technical College and Indian Institute of Science have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday to enhance scientific understanding of defence adopted technologies and undertake research and development activities in mutually beneficial areas.

The agreement will also facilitate Trainee Officers of the college to access libraries in IISc. Aerospace Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Radar and Microwave, Guided Weapon, Drone Technologies, computer science and cyber security.
