Buddha Purnima, or Buddha Jayanti or Vesak, is an annual celebration observed on the first full moon of the Hindu calendar month Vaishakha. This significant day commemorates the birth of Lord Gautam Buddha, who was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautam in Lumbini, present-day Nepal.

The court struck down several classes for reservation as Other Backward Classes (OBC) given under The West Bengal Backward Classes (Other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) Act, 2012.
12. The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has reported significant increases in student enrollment under various categories from 2014-15 to 2021-22.
According to data released on Saturday,
(a) Enrollment of Scheduled Caste (SC) students rose by 44%, from 4.61 million to 6.62 million.
(b) SC female student enrollment increased by 51%.
(c) Scheduled Tribe (ST) student enrollment grew by 65.2%, from 1.641 million to 2.71 million.
(d) Female ST enrollment surging by 80%.
(e) Minority female student enrollment also saw a notable rise of 42.3%, growing from 1.07 million to 1.52 million.
(f) Overall higher education enrollment increased by 26.5%, from 34.2 million in 2014-15 to 43.3 million in 2021-22.

1. The Supreme Court today pulled up former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren for suppressing facts regarding filing of regular bail plea in trial court in a money laundering case, prompting the JMM leader to withdraw his petition challenging arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.
2. The Mumbai Crime Branch has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Ghatkopar billboard accident case. 17 people have been killed and around 75 people were injured in the accident. A massive billboard collapsed on a petrol pump in Ghatkopar area in Mumbai during a storm on 13 May.
3. The Manipur government on Monday lodged a zero FIR against unknown persons after a photograph showing renaming of “Thangting camp” as “Kuki National Front-Military Council (KNP-MC)” considered sacred by the majority Meiteis, went viral on social media and triggered anger in the Meitei community.

A court in Delhi has granted bail to the 41-year-old man arrested for allegedly assaulting and splashing Congress Lok Sabha candidate Kanhaiya Kumar with ink, saying it has to balance the state’s interest of maintaining public order with the accused’s right to personal liberty. The Delhi police arrested one of the accused, Ajay Kumar, on Tuesday morning.
5. A day after a person was killed and two others were injured in post-poll violence in Bihar’s Saran district, the police on Wednesday conducted flag marches in several areas of the district to maintain law and order.

Four people were killed as torrential rains lashed several parts of Kerala, with the India meteorological department on Wednesday sounding a red alert in five districts that were likely to receive heavy rainfall. 2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has transferred a record surplus of Rs 2.1 lakh crore to the central government for FY’2023-24, exceeding expectations. 1. Indian Army conducted Exercise “𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐀𝐓 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐇𝐀𝐑” with it’s Aviation Brigade in Northeast India. Ex Airavat Prahar involved complex operations conducted in an intense air defence and electronic warfare environment.
Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, general officer commanding-in-chief (GOC-in-C), Eastern Command, witnessed the Exercise from an indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) that participated in the operations. The Exercise involved indigenous aviation assets such as the Prachand (LCH), Rudra (ALH-WSI) and Dhruv Mark-III ALHs.
2. General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), interacted with the officers who are set to superannuate on 31 May 2024, during the Retiring Officers’ Seminar (ROS). The seminar, held at the Army Headquarters.
3. Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari inaugurated the IAF Emergency Medical Response System (EMRS) facility at the Command Hospital in Bengaluru. This advanced facility is set to enhance the IAF’s ability to provide immediate and effective medical assistance to its personnel and their families.
4. Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan has stressed the need to strengthen India’s cyber defence capabilities. General Chauhan attended a programme on Exercise Cyber Suraksha – 2024 in New Delhi.
Defence Ministry said, the comprehensive cyber defence exercise is being conducted by Defence Cyber Agency from 20th to 24th May.
