1. The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on a stormy note yesterday with both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessing adjournments amid ruckus by the opposition parties over various issues including demand for immediate discussion on Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

2. The Parliament has passed the Bills of Lading Bill 2025 with the Rajya Sabha approving it yesterday. The Lok Sabha had already passed the legislation in March this year. It aims to update and simplify the legal framework for shipping documents. It will replace the Indian Bills of Lading Act, 1856.

3. In a surprise political development, Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday evening, The reasons behind the abrupt resignation remain undisclosed, Vice President Shri Jagdeep
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till 2027.

He is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and his resignation came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. As per the Indian Constitution, the election for the new Vice President must be conducted within six months.

4. The Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO will launch the NISAR Earth Observation satellite, developed jointly with American space agency NASA on the 30th of this month at 1740 hours from Sriharikota. GSLV F16 heavy lift rocket will place the satellite, into a 743 kms Sun Synchronous orbit. The NISAR satellite will scan the entire globe every 12 days and provide high resolution, all weather, day and night data.

5. The Assam government has recently introduced a subsidy scheme offering Rs 5 per litre of milk to dairy farmers. This initiative aims to increase milk production and improve farmers’ incomes.

6. Gujarat has become the first Indian state to launch a Tribal Genome Sequencing Project, aimed at improving healthcare for tribal communities through genetic research. The initiative focuses on early detection of hereditary diseases and development of personalised medical solutions using genome data.

7. India’s creative sector received a major boost with the inauguration of the first campus of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai. This initiative aims to elevate India’s presence in the global AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comic & Extended Reality) ecosystem by nurturing industry-ready talent through world-class training and collaborations.

8. The government on Monday agreed to list a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha next week .

9. Former Kerala Chief Minister and veteran CPM leader VS Achuthanandan passed away yesterday after a prolonged illness and hospitalisation in Thiruvananthapuram. The 101 year old leader had been on ventilator support in a private hospital in the city for the last two weeks.

10. In Maharashtra, heavy rain disrupted normal life in Mumbai and its surrounding areas yesterday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the Konkan region, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, excluding Palghar, for the next 24 hours.

1. The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a presidential reference under Article 143 on 22 July 2025. This follows its April 8 verdict that fixed a three-month deadline for the President to act on Bills reserved by Governors. The reference was made by President Droupadi Murmu seeking the Court’s advisory opinion on timelines for assent to state Bills.

2. The Maharashtra government is considering challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision to acquit all 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case.

3. The court dismissed an appeal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against a Karnataka High Court ruling. This ruling had nullified summons issued to Siddaramaiah’s wife, BM Parvathi, concerning the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) alternative site allotment case.

4. The Odisha government on Monday banned sale of petrol and diesel in plastic bottles.

5. The Mumbai police registered an FIR against a retired deputy secretary posted at Mantralaya in south Mumbai for allegedly duping 19 Maharashtra government officers and employees to the tune of Rs 2.61 crore in a housing scam.

6. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned four leading film personalities — Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi — in connection with its ongoing probe into the promotion of illegal online betting apps like JungleeRummy.

1. The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Mumbai Film Festival has been officially cancelled for 2025, just a year after it lost its primary sponsor. The sudden cancellation marks a significant blow to India’s film festival circuit, which has long regarded MAMI as one of the most prestigious platforms for independent and global cinema.

The cancellation of the festival for the first time in 28 years has invited a wave of reactions from cinephiles and industry insiders. The festival was started in 1997.

Over the years, actors like Aamir Khan provided financial contributions while Priyanka Chopra and Kiran Rao served as the Chairperson. In 2023, the festival was sponsored by Jio. But they opted out as title sponsor last year. Dungarpur took over as Festival Director last year after the previous director, Anupama Chopra, stepped down.

2. Karnataka government recently issued a draft notification proposing a ₹200 cap on ticket prices for all theatres and multiplexes – a move aimed at making cinema more accessible. Besides, it also invited the public to send in feedback.

1. Yard 3034 (Ajay), the eighth and last ship of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has been launched on 21 Jul 2025 at GRSE, Kolkata in the presence of VAdm Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel (COM).

2. HAL accelerates the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) project. It prepares a ₹13000 crore Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) note. The proposal seeks approval to build five flying prototypes, including a naval variant, the Deck-Based Multirole Helicopter (DBMRH).

3. India’s Tejas MK2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) jets will receive regular, smartphone-style software upgrades, enhancing maintainability and mission flexibility.

4. Russia has offered India joint research and development of the next-generation PAKDA (Prospective Aviation Complex for Long-Range Aviation) is designed to be a futuristic, subsonic, radar-evading strategic bomber, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads for advanced strategic aviation cooperation.

5. The Defence Acquisition Council is expected to clear the procurement of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) armed drones, enhancing reconnaissance and combat capabilities for India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force.

6. An FT-7BGI fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed in Dhaka, highlighting concerns over regional air safety and aircraft maintenance.

7. The 13th High-Level Meeting (HLM) between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Korea Coast Guard (KCG) was held in New Delhi on 21 July 2025. Both sides engaged in discussions to boost cooperation in Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), Pollution Response (PR), and Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE) .
