rbi to withdraw rs 2000 currency note from circulation

RBI to withdraw Rs 2000 currency note from circulation but it will continue to be legal tender till September 30, 2023. Advised the general public to exchange or deposit them in their bank accounts by September 30.

The printing of Rs 2,000 notes started in November 2016 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes overnight.

5. The recently inaugurated one of India’s biggest Skywalk bridges, spanning 570 meters in length and 4.2 meters in width, was officially opened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. This skywalk bridge serves as a crucial connection between the Mambalam railway station and T Nagar bus terminus.

6. The Centre has brought an ordinance to set up a permanent authority including Delhi CM, Delhi Chief Secretary and Delhi Principal Secretary (Home) to make recommendations to the Delhi L-G regarding transfer posting, vigilance and other incidental matters. The SC had earlier ruled that Delhi government has legislative and executive powers over services, except for public order, police and land.

7. Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has become the first city in India to measure its progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The city has adopted a Voluntary Local Review (VLR) process.

8. Former Congress leader and former Union minister Subhash Maharia joined the BJP in the presence of BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh in Jaipur. Apart from Maharia, retired IPS officer Ramdev Singh Khairwa, retired IAS officer PR Meena, retired IPS officers Gopal Meena, Narsee Kirad and Hemant Sharma also joined BJP.

9. Union Cabinet, under the leadership of PM Modi, has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and The Chartered Accountants of the Maldives (CA Maldives).

10. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on Friday asked illegal encroachers to vacate government lands by May 31 or be ready to face action. He added that people residing on encroached land in residential areas shouldn’t worry as they won’t be dislocated. The state government has so far freed over 9,000 acres of government land.

11. Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and K V Viswanathan sworn in as Supreme Court judges.

12. Delhi High Court dismissed an appeal challenging appointment of Dr Najma Akhtar as the Vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia university.

CRIME REPORT

1. National Investigation Agency, NIA arrested two wanted close associates of Canada-based ‘listed terrorist’ Arsh Dhalla at Delhi IG Airport.

2. The district administration, a Railways team and police in Uttarakhand’s Nainital demolished over 500 illegal constructions on the railway land in the Lalkuan area.

3. Telangana’s Karimnagar Police arranged nearly 100 modified bike silencers on the road and got them crushed by a roller, a video of which has surfaced online. After the drive, police warned of action against mechanics who fit modified silencers to bikes after removing the original stock silencers. A counselling session was also held for motorists caught drunk driving.

4. An eight-year-old boy died after he was mauled by a pack of stray dogs in Telangana’s Hanumakonda. The attack reportedly took place when he was sleeping under a tree. The deceased was identified as the son of Uttar Pradesh-based migrant labourers.

5. Bombay High Court on Friday ordered no coercive action against former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede till May 22. Wankhede had filed a petition seeking the quashing of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR against him for allegedly demanding a ₹25 crore-bribe from Shah Rukh Khan for not implicating his son Aryan Khan in the drug bust case.

1. The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation and asked all to exchange or deposit them by September 30,2023. The RBI also asked banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 notes with immediate effect.

The banknotes in ₹2000 denomination will continue to be legal tender. To complete the exercise in a time-bound manner and to provide adequate time to the members of public, all banks shall provide deposit and/or exchange facility for ₹2000 banknotes until September 30, 2023.”

2. After the RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation, former RBI Deputy Governor R Gandhi said the withdrawal of ₹2,000 banknotes will help in curbing black money to a “great extent” as people are hoarding the high-value currency.

3. Why is the RBI withdrawing ₹2,000 banknotes from circulation?
RBI introduced ₹2,000 banknote in November 2016 to meet currency requirement after demonetising ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes. About 89% of ₹2,000 banknotes were issued prior to March 2017 and are at the end of their estimated lifespan of 4-5 years. It isn’t commonly used for transactions and stock of other banknotes is adequate to meet public’s currency requirement, RBI said.

4. RBI board approved surplus transfer of Rs 87,416 crore rupees to the central government for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2023.

5. State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public-sector lender, has reported impressive financial results for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2023. The bank’s net profit witnessed a significant surge of 83 percent, reaching a record high of Rs 16,694 crore.

6. Punjab National Bank (PNB) on Friday reported a standalone net profit for the quarter ended March at ₹1158.61 crore, a surge of 474.79% from ₹201.57 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Its net interest income was ₹9,498.75 crore, registering a growth of 30.04% year-on-year from ₹7,304.13 crore.
