1. Government gives nod to enhance security deployment at all Central government hospitals by 25 per cent; A committee headed by DG Health Services to look into aspects of hospital security and facilities.

4. The notification for the first phase of the general elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir will be issued today. The last date for submission of nominations for this phase will be 27 August.

7. Amidst protests raging over the rape and murder of a doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital here, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has sought an appointment from President Droupadi Murmu and is likely to meet her on Tuesday (20 August 2024).
8. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has sanctioned ₹381.16 crore for the works of developing the road connecting Vadodara with Ekta Nagar, famous as a world tourist destination, as a high-speed corridor.
9. Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said he would quit politics if CM Eknath Shinde asserted that he was hindering the Maratha quota process, referring to allegations by activist Manoj Jarange.
Jarange has been demanding the implementation of the state government’s ‘sage soyare’ (blood relatives) notification to grant Marathas reservation under the OBC category. He wants Kunbi certificates to be issued to all Marathas. Kunbis, an agrarian community, enjoy OBC status in the state.
10. Jharkhand Bharatiya Janata Party president Babulal Marandi on Monday said no discussions had yet taken place with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Champai Soren regarding his potential switch to the Bhartiya Janata party.
11. Andhrapradesh Vijayawada:Deputy Chief Minister (panchayat raj and rural development) K. Pawan Kalyan on Monday said grama sabha meetings will be held simultaneously in 13,326 panchayats on August 23 to pass resolutions on the works that need to be taken up under the NREGA scheme in the villages across the state.
12. Semiconductor maker Kaynes Technology will inaugurate its advanced electronic unit at Kongarakalan, Telangana on the outskirts of the city on August 23.

1. Resident doctors and medical students staged protests in the National Capital yesterday against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. Doctors from AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, Northern Railway Central Hospital, and other institutions staged protests near Nirman Bhawan in Delhi and demanded justice in the matter.
2. Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the rape-murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, has been granted permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused, a civic volunteer in the agency’s custody, as protests continue to disrupt healthcare services in state-run hospitals across West Bengal.
3. The Central Bureau of Investigation- CBI has arrested four accused including a manager of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh in a bribery and corruption case. It has also recovered around four crore rupees in cash during the searches from the accused manager’s residence.
4. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear as the first matter on Tuesday a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata amid the ongoing nationwide doctors’ strike over it

6. In Karnataka, the BJP-JDS alliance is staging a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the MUDA land allotment scam at Bengaluru.

Delhi:The Centre defended its 2019 law criminalising instant triple talaq in the Supreme Court, arguing that the practice is harmful to the institution of marriage and violates the rights of women. The government stated that triple talaq, or talaq-e-biddat, legitimises the abandonment of wives by their husbands, constituting a public wrong that undermines the social institution of marriage.

1. Ex-Army Chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan passed away at his residence in Chennai yesterday (19 Aug). He was 83.
(a) The 20th Chief of Army Staff was born in Trivandrum, Kerala, on 5 December 1940.
(b) He was an alumnus of the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, in Pune.
(c) He was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery after graduating from the Indian Military Academy (IMA) on 13 December 1959.
(d) He commanded an Infantry Brigade from December 1988 to February 1991 at Ranchi, Bihar and Punjab and was then appointed as the General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division in Punjab from March 1991 to August 1992.
(e) A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) at Wellington in 1973 and the National Defence College (NDC) at New Delhi.
(f) General Padmanabhan held the appointment of Director General Military Intelligence (DGMI) after the successful culmination of which, he took over as the GOC of the Northern Command at Udhampur on 1 September, 1996. Before being appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, he was the GOC of Southern Command.
(g) He served as the Chief of Army Staff from 30 September, 2000 to 31 December 2002.
(h) Former Chief of Army Staff General Sundararajan Padmanabhan, affectionately known as ‘Paddy’ in army circles.
2. Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi chaired a high-level meeting focusing on the ongoing transformational initiatives by the Indian Army and its contribution towards achieving the objective of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
3. Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Tabar commanded by Captain MR Harish arrived at Esbjerg, Denmark for a two-day visit. The ongoing visit by INS Tabar to Esbjerg, Denmark aims to enhance the existing bonds between both nations and navies.
4. The bilateral air exercise “Udara Shakti 2024” between the
Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force
(RMAF) concluded successfully recently on 9 August 2024. This
exercise, hosted by the RMAF at its base in Kuantan,
Malaysia.
5. In Jammu and Kashmir a Central Reserve Police Force officer was killed after terrorists attacked a CRPF patrol party in Udhampur district yesterday afternoon. In Cheel area of Ramnagar tehsil of Udhampur district, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on the patrol party of CRPF 187 battalion in which one CRPF inspector was killed.
6. In view of recent terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, security arrangements have been intensified on the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway (NH-244) and the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based facial recognition systems, drones, and CCTVs are also being used to monitor anti-social elements, in the upper reaches of Doda, Ramban, and Udhampur districts.
