1. Supreme Court orders release of A G Perarivalan, convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, exercising its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.

Perarivalan was arrested on June 11, 1991, at the age of 19, weeks after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a suicide bomb attack at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21.

2. Cabinet approves amendments to National Policy on Biofuels to make India energy independent by 2047.

20. *UTTAR PRADESH* : Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s 41-year-old nephew Achin Mishra alias Sonu died after a branch of a tree fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday.

Agra Mayor Naveen Jain said if there is a plaque of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb or if a road is named after him, it must be removed. “Aurangzeb was a cruel ruler who destroyed Hindu temples and compelled people of the Hindu community to convert to Islam,” he said. His comment came after controversy over Akbaruddin Owaisi’s visit to Aurangzeb’s tomb.

22. *UTTARAKHAND* : Colonel Ajay Kothiyal (Retired), AAP’s CM face in the Uttarakhand Assembly elections that were held in February this year, resigned from the party on Wednesday. He had contested polls from the Gangotri Assembly constituency and joined AAP on April 19 last year.

23. *WEST BENGAL* : Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest in Kolkata against the alleged irregularities in the SSC recruitment process and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The police used water cannons and barricades to stop the protesters.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Imphal organised a one day media workshop Vartalap on improving government information dissemination to media while sensitizing them on various schemes and projects.

The workshop was inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan. Around forty journalists based in Imphal attended the workshop.

DEFENCE:

1. Indian Navy carries out successful maiden firing of first indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile. Indian Navy successfully undertook maiden firing of the first indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile from Seeking 42B helicopter at Integrated Test Range, Balasore.

2. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 17 May launched two different types of surface ships,

Named Surat and Udaygiri, and both frontline vessels, the ships will go through rigorous sea trials before they can be commissioned into the Navy, after which they will add the INS prefix to their names.

3. In Assam, rescue and relief operations have been intensified by the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administrations in flood-hit areas. Over four lakh people have been affected due to floods and landslides in 26 districts while eight persons lost their lives.
