Internationally renowned scientist and current Deputy Director General (Research) at ICRISAT, Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) by the Central Government.

8. Eight cheetahs will be brought to India from Botswana in southern Africa in two phases, including four by May 2025. NTCA officials informed that more than Rs 112 crore has been spent on the cheetah project in the country so far, of which 67 per cent has gone into cheetah rehabilitation in Madhya Pradesh.

9. Maharashtra government has announced that Hindi will be a compulsory third language from Classes I to V in Marathi and English medium schools, in line with the National Education Policy, NEP 2020. Currently, only Marathi and English are mandatory from Classes I to IV in these schools.

1. The Reserve Bank of India fined Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank, and Punjab National Bank Rs 1.29 crore for regulatory non-compliances in customer service, KYC, and loan practices.

1. INS Sunayna, currently on deployment to Africa as Indian Ocean Ship IOS SAGAR arrived at Nacala Port, Mozambique on 17 Apr 25. The ship had earlier participated in the inaugural session of the India-Africa maritime partnership exercise AIKEYME 25, at Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

2. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will fly to the International Space Station next month.

3. India is on the verge of finalizing a landmark $700 million deal with Vietnam for the sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, representing a significant advancement in India’s defence export capabilities and a strategic shift in Indo-Pacific security dynamics.This agreement, expected to be signed in the coming months.

4. The Indian naval sailing vessel INSV Tarini, crewed by an all-women team, is now homeward bound after successfully completing a critical phase of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition.

The crew has triumphantly crossed the challenging waters of the Southern Ocean and navigated the three major global capes: Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), Cape Leeuwin (Australia), and Cape Horn (South America).

5. India is on the brink of finalising a significant defence deal for 26 Rafale Marine jets for the Navy, with negotiations nearing completion despite substantial cost concerns. Simultaneously, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is reportedly considering the acquisition of 40 additional Rafale jets to address its depleting combat strength.

6. The Ministry of Science and Technology, through the Technology Development Board (TDB), has taken a pivotal step toward indigenizing India’s small arms manufacturing capability by extending financial assistance to DVIPA Defence India Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad (erstwhile DVIPA Armour Pvt. Ltd.). The project, titled “Development and Commercialisation of 7.62 mm x 51 mm Assault Rifles,” aims to produce high-performance.

7. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has successfully conducted preliminary sea trials of its indigenously developed 651 kW Water-Jet Propulsion System aboard the Indian Navy’s Fast Interceptor Craft.

8. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh concluded his visit to the United Kingdom with a strong call for deepening bilateral cooperation between India and the UK, particularly in the defence sector.

9. India has set an ambitious defence production goal of ₹3 lakh crore by 2029, with current production projected to cross ₹1.60 lakh crore. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.
