1. Preparations in full swing for polling in first phase of Lok Sabha elections today; Voting to be held for 102 parliamentary constituencies. A general election is to be held in India from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha, in seven phases. The results will be announced on 4 June 2024.
2. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajiv Kumar has appealed to the voters to realise their democratic responsibility and exercise their voting right.
3. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the Saksham app, a mobile application designed to facilitate voter registration and electoral services for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). The app aims to make the voting process more accessible and inclusive by providing customized services to PwDs, ensuring their active participation in the democratic process.
4. The Election Commission of India has told the Supreme Court that no mismatch has been detected ever between the votes counted in the Electronic Voting Machines and the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail slips (VVPATs).
The ECI said that it has matched the EVM votes with more than 4 crore VVPAT slips and no instance of mismatch has been found so far. The ECI stated this in the written statement filed in response to the queries raised by the Supreme Court (on April 16).
5. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe heat-wave conditions over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the next four days. Heat Wave conditions are also likely over Jharkhand, north Konkan, Saurashtra, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
6. The India Meteorological Department has also issued warnings of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in isolated places of Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka on 19 April and 21 April.
7. Madhya Pradesh emerges as a frontrunner in the effective execution of the Green Credit Programme (GCP) initiated by the central government. Over the past two months, the GCP has greenlit tree plantation initiatives spanning across 500 land parcels, encompassing 4,980 hectares spread over 10 states. (Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Assam. Additional states partaking in this initiative include Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Odisha, collectively earmarking over 10,000 hectares for GCP interventions.)
8. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar today administered oath to the elected Members of Rajya Sabha in Parliament House. Mr Dhankhar administered oaths to Bhim Singh, Parmar Jasvantsinh Salamsinh, Sangeeta, Naveen Jain, and Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi.
9. West Bengal’s ruling Trinamul Congress released “Didir Shopoth” (Didi’s pledges) in its manifesto. One of the TMC’s poll promises is the removal of the citizenship laws. It states under the “Swaccho Ayin, Swadhin Bharat” (Transparent Law, Independent India) title, “The botched up Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be abolished and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be discontinued. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not be implemented in the country.
10. Prof Vinay Kumar Pathak, vice-chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur was appointed as 103rd president of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

1. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is examining the claim that Nestle added sugar to infant milk. Sources said the findings will be placed before the Scientific panel. The move came following a report from a Swiss investigative organisation that claimed the Swiss multinational company added sugar to its milk formula brand for infants and children of up to two years old.
2. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Waqf Board.
3. Delhi Cabinet minister Atishi on Thursday claimed there was a ‘huge conspiracy’ to kill Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi excise policy case, by denying him home-cooked food in the jail.
Enforcement Directorate on Thursday claimed before a court that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been eating mangoes, and sweets and having tea with sugar in Tihar Jail, despite having type II diabetes to spike his sugar level and to create a medical grounds for his bail.
4. A Ludhiana court in Punjab on Thursday awarded a death sentence to a woman for the horrific murder of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl by burying her alive.
Sessions judge Munish Singal convicted the 35-year-old woman, Neelam, a resident of the Shimlapuri area, last week for killing the child.
5. In Punjab, the train service remained disrupted on Thursday as farmers continued their ‘rail roko’ protest on the second consecutive day at the railway station near Shambhu Border.
Farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) blocked the Delhi-Ambala-Amritsar railway track near the Shambhu border.
6. A special court in Pune will pronounce its final judgement in the rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar murder case on 10 May.
Dr Dabholkar was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants during his morning walk on Omkareshwar bridge here on 20 August 2013.

1. Reserve Bank has imposed penalties totalling Rs 60.3 lakh on five co-operative banks for contravention of various regulatory norms.
(a) A penalty of Rs 43.30 lakh has been imposed on Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank for non-compliance with RBI directions on ‘ban on loans and advances to directors and their relatives.
(b) Rs 5 lakh each on The Kangra Co-operative Bank (New Delhi), Rajdhani Nagar Sahkari Bank (Lucknow), and Zila Sahakari Bank, Garhwal (Kotdwar, Uttarakhand).
(c) A penalty of Rs 2 has been imposed on District Co-operative Bank (Dehradun).
2. Paytm has received approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to migrate its users to other banks for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based payment services.
The company has completed its integration with four major banks – State Bank of India, Yes Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank – and has started the process of transitioning its users to these new Payment System Provider (PSP) banks.
3. Google has fired 28 employees after they protested against the company’s cloud-computing contract with Israel, called Project Nimbus. The employees had staged sit-in protests at two Google offices recently. Google has said that it has no place for such behaviour and will not tolerate it.
4. Sany India, a leading manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, has launched the SKT105E Electric Dump Truck. This remarkable feat marks a significant milestone in the Indian mining industry, as the SKT105E becomes the first locally manufactured electric off-highway dump truck, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious and cost-effective future.
5. As per the notification issued by Ministry of Finance, 100% Foreign Direct Investment has been allowed for manufacturing and operation of satellites, satellite data products and ground segment and user segment.

1. Vice-Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi has been appointed the next Chief of Naval Staff. He is currently the Vice-Chief of the Navy, and will take over on superannuation of the current chief, Admiral R. Hari Kumar on April 30.
2. The Indian Navy inaugurated a state-of-the-art Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization and Evaluation (SPACE) in Kerala’s Idukki. This platform was set up by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory of DRDO to serve as a premier testing and evaluation hub for sonar systems used by the Indian Navy on various platforms such as ships, submarines, and helicopters.
3. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile. The missile was test-fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
4. Two civilian patients in need of immediate medical help were evacuated in an AN-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force from Kargil to Srinagar on Wednesday.
