5G technology trials

1.Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has expressed happiness that on National Vaccination Day 2022, India begins COVID jabs for 12 to 14 year olds.

2. Caretaker Chief Ministers of Manipur N. Biren Singh and Dr Pramod Sawant of Goa met PM Modi in New Delhi. In a tweet, PM Modi congratulated Biren Singh on his stupendous victory in the recently concluded Assembly Polls.

3. The CBI has arrested Khalid Moin, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering of Jamia Millia Islamia, in connection with a Rs 1-lakh bribery case,. Mr Moin had allegedly given the structural safety certificate to the Chintels Paradiso apartment in Gurugram, part of which collapsed last month killing two women. His arrest, however, was not connected to the house collapse.

4. Prasanna Acharya of BJD lauded the Railways Ministry for running the Kisan Rail which transported over six lakh tonnes of food products across the country. He also appreciated the Railways’ effort for adopting the indigenous technologies like Kavach to strengthen the Railway infrastructure. He urged the Railways Minister to improve the passengers’ amenities.

5. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday launched green hydrogen-based advanced fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), Toyota Mirai, and said this is the first-of-its-kind project in India that aims to create an ecosystem for such vehicles in the country.

6. Union Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan said that the Government has granted permission to Bharat Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam limited for conducting 5G technology trials .

7. *DELHI* high court on Wednesday allowed reopening of three floors of Nizamuddin Markaz, where the Tablighi Jamaat congregation was held in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained shut since then, to enable devotees to offer prayers during Shab-e-Barat.

8. *BIHAR* : Former Union minister Sharad Yadav announced on 16 Mar Wednesday that his party Loktantarik Janata Dal will merge with Rashtriya Janata Dal on March 20 as part of his efforts to unite various offshoots of the erstwhile Janata Dal.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad had quit Janata Dal in 1997 to form his own party over his differences with its leadership as the probe against fodder scam, in which he was a main accused, gathered pace. Sharad Yadav was then seen as his rival within the Janata Dal, and he later joined with Nitish Kumar to end RJD’s 15-year reign in Bihar in 2005.

11. *MANIPUR* : Taking full responsibility of the party’s defeat in the recently held assembly elections, N Loken Singh on 16 Mar (Wednesday) resigned as the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee

12. *PUNJAB* : PM Modi has congratulated Bhagwant Mann on taking oath as Punjab Chief Minister. In a tweet, Mr Modi assured that the centre will work together with the state government for the growth of Punjab and welfare of the its people.

He was administered the oath by Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit at Khatarkalan, ancestral village of Martyr Bhagat Singh in SBS Nagar (Nawanshehr) district.

13. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned from the post of the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He has sent his resignation to the president of Indian National Congress

14. *TELANGANA* Intermediate Exams 2022: As per the new schedule, the first year intermediate exams will start from May 6 while the second year intermediate exams from May 7.

15. *WEST BENGAL* : BJP MLA Bishnu Prasad Sharma from Kurseong in Darjeeling hills on 16 Mar (Wednesday) demanded the creation of a new state by separating the North Bengal region from West Bengal.

FINANCE:
16. After staying above USD 100 per barrel for two weeks, international oil prices fell to USD 99.84 on Tuesday, easing margin pressure on fuel retailers who have been holding petrol and diesel prices despite a spike in the cost of raw material. For India, the fall in oil prices is good news as it will lower the import bill of the world’s third-biggest oil importer.

17. Brent crude oil prices, which soared past USD 100 per barrel on February 28 and touched a 14-year high of USD 139 per barrel on March 7, fell over 7 per cent on 15 Mar (Tuesday). International oil prices, which shoot up since Russia invaded Ukraine, have swung about USD 40 per barrel in little more than a week.

18. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) or jet fuel price was increased by 18.32 per cent to Rs 110,666.29 per kilolitre (kl) in the national capital on Wednesday, the steepest hike ever, according to a price notification issued by the government-owned fuel retailers. With the increase, the price of jet fuel has hit an all-time high.

19. “The Kashmir Files”: J&K PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said the Centre is weaponizing pain of Kashmiri Pandits Srinagar: The aggressive manner in which the Centre is promoting “The Kashmir Files” film.

20. Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker is getting trolled after she took a dig at The Kashmir Files’ director Vivek Agnihotri. The film, which released on March 11, is getting raving reviews from fans and critics. Many Bollywood celebs, including Akshay Kumar, Yami Gautam and Hansal Mehta, among others, have come out in support of the film and have even requested people to watch it.

DEFENCE:
21. Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Saksham’, the fifth in the series of 105 M-Class offshore patrol vessel, has been commissioned on Wednesday in Goa.Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar commissioned offshore patrol vessel Indian Coast Guard Ship Saksham into service in Goa in presence of ICG Director-General, VS Pathania.

22. Supreme Court upheld the Government’s decision on One Rank-One Pension, OROP, for defence forces as it did not find any constitutional infirmity on the OROP principle and the notification of 7th November, 2015. A bench comprising Justices D.Y Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath said, the policy decision of the Centre of OROP is not arbitrary and it is not for the court to go into the policy matters of the government.

23. India on 16 Mar Wednesday paid tribute to CDS Bipin Rawat on the occasion of his 65th birth anniversary. Remembering the late army officer who was also the country’s first chief of defence staff, the Indian Army announced the setting up of a ‘Chair of Excellence’ in his memory at the United Service Institution of India (USI). General Naravane also handed over a cheque for ₹5 lakh to Maj. Gen. B.K. Sharma (retd) that will be paid as an honorarium to the nominated Chair of Excellence.

24. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a supplementary charge sheet in a special court in Delhi against former Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma and four Indian Air Force personnel in alleged connection with the Rs 3,700-crore AgustaWestland scam.

According to officials aware of the developments in the case, the central probe agency filed the charge sheet after taking the approval from the central government to prosecute Sharma, who was the Defence Secretary between 2011 and 2013 before being appointed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

25. Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build 27 double lane metal bridges on strategic roads near India’s northern and northeastern borders.

The MoU involves fabricating and launching 27 carriageway double lane galvanised modular bridges of 7.5 meters with Indian Road Congress (IRC) Load Class 70. The two-year contract, worth around Rs 60 crore, was inked in New Delhi on Tuesday (15 March).

26. After the misfire of a Brahmos missile to Pakistan recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that standing operating procedures (SOP) were being reviewed and a high-level inquiry was underway to determine the reasons behind the incident.

In a statement in Parliament, the minister said that the incident happened when the missile was accidently released during inspection. “During routine maintenance and inspection, a missile was accidentally released at around 7 pm. It was later learnt that the missile had landed inside the territory of Pakistan.
