1. President Droupadi Murmu has greeted the people on the eve of Id-Ul-Azha. In her message, the President said, the holy festival of Id-Ul-Azha is a symbol of renunciation and sacrifice.

*Bakra Eid or Eid Ul Adha* is going to be celebrated today (on 17 June, 2024)💐.This festival is across the world by Muslims. Eid Ul Fitr and Bakra Eid is celebrated in the month of Dhul Hijjah, the Twelfth month according to the Islamic Lunar Calendar. This is the festival of Sacrifice.

Hajj Pilgrimage also takes place in the same month when all Muslims visit to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Sighting of the crescent Moon marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his thoughts with the people of the country and abroad in the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Akashwani on the 30th of this month. It will be the 111th episode of the monthly radio programme and the first to be aired after Mr Modi’s re-election as the Prime Minister for the third term.

3. People can submit their ideas and suggestions through the toll free number 1800-11-7800. They can also share their input online via the Narendra Modi App or the MyGov Open Forum till 28th June.

4. Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the newly constructed Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House complex yesterday. The Prerana Sthal has been developed in such a way that visitors to the Parliament complex could easily see the statues of great leaders and freedom fighters at one place.

5. The annual yatra of Amarnath is set to begin from the 29th of this month and will continue til the 19th of August.

6. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said, no official of the National Testing Agency (NTA) will be spared if found guilty of irregularities in conducting this year’s National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) exam. Speaking to media persons at Sambalpur in Odisha.

7. The Karnataka government on June 15 hiked local VAT (value added tax) from 25.92 per cent to 29.84 per cent on petrol and from 14.3 per cent to 18.4 per cent on diesel. This led to petrol price now costing Rs 102.86 per litre in Bengaluru and diesel coming for Rs 88.94 a litre.

8. In Sikkim, bad weather has hampered the evacuation of around 2,000 tourists including 15 foreigners, stranded in Lachung and Chungthang in Mangan District following the landslides.

9. India Meteorological Department-IMD has predicted heat wave to severe heat wave conditions over the isolated pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, Northeast Madhya Pradesh, North Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand.

10. A large number of devotees took holy dip in river ganges on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra yesterday. Crowds of devotees were seen at ghats in Prayagraj, Varanasi, Haridwar, Garh Mukteshwar and other places since early morning.

11. Former IAS officer P K Mishra has been re-appointed as the Principal Secretary to PM Modi.

12. New registration charges for agriculture and non-agriculture land and properties will come into force from August 1. This followed the recent decision of the Telangana government to revise the market value of lands to boost its revenues.

13. The announcement of the date for the election of a new Speaker for the Lok Sabha has set off speculation over who could occupy that role come June 26, with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners likely to meet around June 22 or June 23 to decide the alliance’s candidate.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has started a multi-modal awareness campaign to counter the rising financial fraud incidents in the country. Under the campaign, the general public is being made aware to protect themselves from these financial fraud traps through several platforms including newspapers, mobile messages, emails, and social media.

2. Thirteen people were arrested a day after members of two communities clashed in Medak town of Telangana over alleged transportation of cows for slaughter ahead of Bakrid festival. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC was clamped by authorities after clashes broke out in the town on Saturday night.

3. Former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Sunday strongly countered Elon Musk’s criticism of electronic voting machines and termed it “a huge sweeping generalisation” even as the Tesla boss responded saying “anything can be hacked”. Chandrasekhar — former minister of state for Electronics and IT — disagreed with Musk’s opinion about EVMs.

1. India’s wholesale inflation, measured by the wholesale price index (WPI), surged to a 15-month high of 2.61% in May from 1.26% in April, driven by an adverse base effect and a sharp increase in food prices. The inflation rate for food items reached 9.82%, contrasting with -3.61% in May 2023.

2. ATM operators in India are advocating for an increase in interchange fees by Rs 2 per transaction, citing financial sustainability challenges. The Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMI) has formally approached the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to raise the current maximum fee from Rs 21 to Rs 23 per transaction.

3. The Finance Ministry has set a cap of ₹10 crore for arbitration cases. This move aims to mitigate the perceived challenges of lengthy proceedings and potential misconduct among arbitrators. The Ministry also advises against automatically including arbitration clauses in large government contracts, emphasizing mediation and judicial adjudication as viable alternatives.

1. At the 18th Mumbai International Festival, noted film producer Apoorva Bakshi yesterday inaugurated the DOC Film bazaar. Approva Bakshi is the producer of the acclaimed web series ‘Delhi Crime’. Festival director at NFDC, Mumbai Prithul Kumar was present on the occasion.

2. Mumbai police registered a new case in connection with firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence here in April and arrested a 25-year-old man from Rajasthan on charges of criminal intimidation.

The accused, identified as Banwarilal Laturlal Gujar (25) hailing from Bundi in Rajasthan, was brought to the metropolis where a court remanded him in police custody till June 18.
