6. Results of elections in all the 227 wards in Mumbai were declared: The BJP won 89 and ally Shiv Sena bagged 29 seats, while Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray got 65 and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena six seats.
*The Congress, which fought in alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, bagged 24 seats, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen 8, the Nationalist Congress Party 3, the Samajwadi Party 2 and the Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar got just one seat.
7. Hyderabad Drone Festival to showcase races and aerial displays at Gachibowli Stadium : Telangana Tourism’s Drone Festival at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad is set to feature a packed schedule of competitive races and aerial displays on Friday and Saturday (January 16 and 17, 2026), including finals and a closing ceremony.
8. The BJP announced the schedule for the election of the party’s national president. The nomination will be filed on 19th of this month and on the same day the scrutiny of nomination papers will be done. The election will be held on the 20th January.
9. Andhra Pradesh will host the world’s largest green ammonia project at Kakinada, with AM Green investing $10 billion to build 1.5 MTPA capacity by 2030. The project supports India’s first green ammonia exports and aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
10. Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 will be held from March 19–22 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. Announced by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, the summit will bring global stakeholders together to discuss sustainable electricity systems, clean energy transition, innovation and cross-border collaboration.
11. Ponduru Khadi, a rare hand-woven cotton fabric from Andhra Pradesh, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant milestone for India’s traditional Khadi sector. The recognition is expected to enhance global visibility, ensure legal protection, and improve market access for artisans associated with this centuries-old craft.
12. India’s postal network has taken a major digital leap. For the first time, the Department of Posts has delivered an online order booked through the Open Network for Digital Commerce. This milestone highlights India Post’s expanding role beyond traditional mail services and its growing importance in strengthening India’s digital commerce and logistics ecosystem.

16. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to West Bengal and Assam, beginning on January 17, 2026. On the first day of his visit, the Prime Minister will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya) at Malda town railway station and Guwahati (Kamakhya)-Howrah virtually.

In view of deteriorating air quality in the national capital, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked stage three of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the entire NCR with immediate effect. The decision was taken after the Air Quality Index in the city recorded at 354 yesterday, which falls into the very poor category.
18. India Meteorological Department has issued an orange color warning for dense to very dense fog conditions over Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Sunday. Dense fog is also predicted at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, West Bengal and Sikkim till tuesday.

1. The Government has blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling website links.
2. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted searches at 26 locations across several States. These states include Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, and Delhi.
3. The Supreme Court yesterday stayed a Calcutta High Court order disqualifying veteran leader Mukul Roy as a West Bengal MLA for defecting from the BJP to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
4. A Delhi court yesterday sent five accused in the Red Fort blast case to judicial custody till 13th of next month. The accused include three doctors and a preacher. The National Investigating Agency’s plea was allowed for Dr Adeel Rather, Dr Shaheen Saeed, Dr Muzammil Ganaie, Maulvi Irfan Ahmad Wagay and Jasir Bilal Wani who were arrested for allegedly aiding terror attacks ahead of the 10th November blast that killed 15. Judicial custody of two others Yasir Ahmed Dar and Naseer Bilal Malla was also extended.
5. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Chandigarh Zonal Office, has provisionally attached movable and immovable properties worth 10.86 Crore rupees under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in a land fraud case. ED initiated the investigation based on an FIR registered by the Haryana Police against some individuals.

2. The National Highways Authority of India-NHAI has launched a pilot initiative to deliver real-time safety alerts to National Highway users. The initiative is aimed at reducing accidents caused by sudden cattle movement on the National Highways, particularly during fog and low-visibility conditions. The pilot initiative is being implemented on the Jaipur-Agra and Jaipur-Rewari National Highway corridors, which have been identified as areas prone to stray cattle movement.

3. Captain Hansja Sharma of the Indian Army has once again brought pride to Jammu and Kashmir by being selected to lead the 251 Army Aviation Squadron during the upcoming Republic Day Parade, marking another historic milestone in her trailblazing career.
Captain Hansja Sharma is the Indian Army’s first woman pilot to fly the Rudra armed helicopter, a frontline combat platform of the Army Aviation Corps. She had earlier scripted history at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS), Nashik, by emerging First in Order of Merit and becoming the first woman officer to win the prestigious Silver Cheetah Trophy, awarded to the best combat aviator of the course.
