1. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday approved the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission to revise salaries of nearly 50 lakh Central government employees and allowances of 65 lakh pensioners.

The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the construction of the third launch pad (TLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. 3. In a major milestone for India’s private space sector, start-ups Pixxel and Digantara successfully launched their satellites on a SpaceX rocket. Pixxel’s satellites will enhance Earth observation, while Digantara’s SCOT satellite will enable real-time tracking of space objects.

4. The Odisha government has introduced a welfare initiative for individuals imprisoned during the 1975-1977 Emergency period. Starting January 2025, all surviving detainees from Odisha will receive a ₹20,000 monthly pension, along with medical benefits and additional support.

5. Two mega hydroelectric power projects would be set up in Arunachal Pradesh with a cumulative investment of around Rs 35,000 crore, Tato-II Hydroelectric Project (700 MW) and the Kamala Hydroelectric Project (1,720 MW). The Tato-II HEP is located on the Siyom River in the Shi Yomi district and the Kamala HEP is located on the Kamala River in the Kamle district.

In West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee administration will hold the ninth edition of Duare Sarkar between January 24 and February 1 where 37 services from various government departments will be made available in a bid to ensure that no eligible person is left out of the benefits extended by the state.

1. The Coast Guard on Wednesday rescued 54 passengers, apart from three crew members, on a stranded boat in the Indian Ocean near Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti.

2. The indigenously made Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will not be part of the Republic Day flypast this year. This was done after an Indian Coast Guard ALH crashed at Porbandar in Gujarat on January 5. The entire fleet was grounded as a precaution under the SOP, with every machine being checked.

3. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a telephonic conversation with the UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey. The two ministers discussed the ongoing defence cooperation issues and emphasised the need to maintain the momentum in bilateral relations.

4. At least 12 Maoists have been killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh in the forests of South Bastar on the Telangana border in Bijapur district. A joint team of Central Reserve Police Force, Cobra Battalion, and District Reserve Guard was on a search operation in the jungles of South Bastar.
