1. ISRO’s latest Earth Observation Satellite EOS-08 was successfully launched by a SSLV rocket from SHAR, Sriharikota, the perfect flight sequence lasted around 17 minutes.

2. Assembly elections for Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir will be held from 18 September to 01 October, the Election Commission announced on 16 August. While polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be held across three phases, Haryana will have one phase. The counting of votes will take place on 04 October, 2024. Maharashtra and Jharkhand are the other States that will go to polls this year.

(a) The assembly elections for 90 seats of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases – 18 & 25 September and on 01 October.

(b) The assembly election in Haryana will be held in single phase on Ooctober 1. The results of both the elections will be declared on 04 October.

3. The J&K Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) administration’s unprecedented reshuffle of at least 198 upper and middle-rung officers in 12 hours in the civil administration and police department on Friday raised many eyebrows, especially from the National Conference (NC).

4. The government is set to launch ‘Kisan Ki Baat’, a monthly radio programme aimed at bringing scientific knowledge to farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on 15 August. This initiative seeks to modernise agricultural practices and empower farmers with cutting-edge scientific information.

5. In response to a recent surge in violence and multiple encounters, the Jammu and Kashmir police have established 19 specialized anti-militancy units across the Jammu division. This initiative aims to enhance counter-terrorism efforts in the region, particularly in areas where militant activities have increased over the past two months.

6. A delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) led by its Director General Chandrajit Banerjee met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat in Amaravati on August 16 (Friday). They discussed the establishment of a Centre for Global Leadership on Competitiveness.

7. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, in his maiden Independence Day address at the Golconda fort on Thursday, committed himself to avoiding high-interest borrowing so as to ensure the state’s financial soundness while safeguarding its citizens from a heavy financial burden.He said that the state government had approached the World Bank for loans at lower interest rates.

8. The Lalbagh flower show in Bengaluru, themed around Dr B R Ambedkar, attracted a record 210,000 visitors and generated ₹92.5 lakh in revenue. The flower show this time around is set to run until 19 August.

9. Heavy Rain Lashes Telangana; A yellow alert has been issued for Hyderabad and surrounding districts. The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) recorded the highest rainfall within Hyderabad at Patancheru, at 61.5 mm by 8 pm.

10. Andhrapradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu visited Delhi on Friday night to meet PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several other central ministers to push the state’s demands there. He urged ministers to approve the proposals related to construction of the Polavaram project. A special plea was made to the central minister for his nod for the construction of a new diaphragm wall. The first phase of the Polavaram project requires Rs 12,500 crores.

11. The Union Cabinet gave its approval to three new metro rail projects and two airport facilities in the country. These include phase three of *Bangalore Metro* at a cost of 15 thousand 600 crore rupees, *Thane Integral Ring Metro* with an outlay of 12 thousand 200 crore rupees and *Pune Metro extension project* at a cost of around three thousand crore rupees.

12. The Maharashtra state will launch the ‘ *Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin* ’ scheme on August 17, announced by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This scheme is designed to give financial help to more than one crore (10 million) eligible women in the state. The launch coincides with Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrated on 19 August. This scheme will provide ₹1,500 per month to eligible women aged 21 to 65 years who come from low-income families (those earning less than ₹2.5 lakh per year).

1. Medical services are hit in several cities across the country following the continuing strike by various medical associations to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee post graduate doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

2. The Indian Medical Association has announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services from 6 am today. The medical body in a statement said that essential services will be maintained and casualty wards will remain operational. The IMA said that out-patient departments (OPD) will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted.

3. The Bharatiya Janata Party organized press conferences in different parts of the country over the alleged atrocities against women in West Bengal. In a statement, the party accused State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of promoting violence against women, citing the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder incident.

BJP leaders also questioned Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other I.N.D.I.A. Alliance leaders over their silence on the Kolkata incident.

4. Tension gripped Jalgaon and Nashik cities in north Maharashtra on Friday after group clashes and stone-pelting during protests organised by a Hindu outfit to condemn atrocities on members of the minority community in Bangladesh, leaving half a dozen policemen injured while controlling the situation.

1. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi felicitates the athletes from Indian Army who took part in Paris Olympics 2024.

2. The Indian Army contingent on Thursday celebrated the 78th Indian Independence Day in joint exercise ‘ *MITRA SHAKTI* ‘ with various activities, including a yoga session with their Sri Lankan counterparts.

3. Two Navy officers were among the 18 Shaurya Chakra awardees named on the eve of the 78th Independence Day.

(a) Captain Sharad Sinsunwal.

(b) Lt Commander Kapil Yadav were awarded for their roles in thwarting piracy and responding to ships facing drone attacks in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Captain Sharad Sinsunwal, in-charge of INS Kolkata, helped rescue 67 people at sea
His ship was deployed for Operation ‘Piracy in the Gulf of Aden’ on 16 December 2023.

4. Japan is set to supply advanced naval ship antennas to India, in a move aimed at enhancing defence capabilities and deterrence within the Indo-Pacific region.This development, expected to be announced at the upcoming two-plus-two meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of both nations in New Delhi.

5. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to address all the top military commanders during the first ever Joint Commanders’ Conference planned to be held on September 4-5 in Lucknow.The conference would be held with the theme “Sashakt aur Surakahit Bharat: Transforming the Armed Forces’ (String and Secure India: Transforming the Armed Forces’).

6. Nalin Prabhat was appointed as the Special Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police and will become the DGP upon R R Swain’s retirement on September 30. Prabhat, a decorated 1992 IPS officer, has extensive experience including leading the Greyhounds anti-Naxal force in Andhra Pradesh and CRPF operations in Kashmir.

CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh was given the “additional” charge of the National Security Guard (NSG) on Thursday following the appointment of incumbent Nalin Prabhat as Jammu and Kashmir Police DGP designate.

7. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over the Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSP) of the Nipun munition to the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA), according to a statement from the Defence Ministry on Friday.AHSP is responsible for holding sealed particulars and patterns, and providing certified copies of drawings or specifications for designated items.

8. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is currently engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening defence ties between India and the United States, particularly in light of PM Modi’s upcoming visit to the US in September 2024.
