GUJARAT govt released 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case of the 2002 Gujarat riots, relying on a 1992 policy following the direction of the Supreme Court, while the State government’s revised policy of 2014 would have made them ineligible for remission. The 2014 policy bars out-of-turn release of prisoners convicted for rape and murder.

11. HIMACHAL : Flights on 16 Aug started from New Delhi and Chandigarh to Bhuntar airport in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu. In the first flight, 32 passengers landed at Bhuntar Airport in an ATR-42 aircraft.

CRIME REPORT

1. J&K : One person shot dead, brother injured in terrorist attack in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched massive manhunt to nab assailants.

Pintu Kumar, a Kashmiri Pandit who was shot at by militants, being treated at a hospital, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022. Militants fired upon civilians in an apple orchard in Chotipora area of Shopian district. While Sunil Kumar died, his brother was injured in the incident.

2. WEST BENGAL : Two teams of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (I-T) are conducted simultaneous raid and search operations at the residence and offices of Kaustav Roy, a Kolkata-based businessman and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a popular Bengali news channel, who is known for his close association with CM Mamata Banerjee.

DEFENCE

1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh handed over indigenously- developed equipment and systems to the Indian Army in New Delhi.

Future Infantry Soldier, new generation anti-personnel mine, upgraded sights system for tanks, high mobility Infantry Protected Vehicles and Assault Boats are among the state-of-the-art equipments.

2. Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a bus carrying ITBP personnel of 4th and 5th Bn, returning from deployment at Poshpathri camp on Shri Amarnathji route, met with an accident at Zig Mour in Pahalgam area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The bus carrying a total of 41 persons, 39 ITBP Jawans and 2 personnel from J & K Police was on its way to Jammu.
As per reports, the bus skidded off the road and plunged 250 feet into a gorge.

The death toll has risen to seven (07) as of now. However, it could increase as some of the injured jawans undergoing treatment are reported to be in critical condition.

3. To celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence, Officers Training Academy, Chennai undertook a cycling expedition, SWATANTRATA RIDE, from Chennai to Puducherry and back, over a distance of 375 kilometers from 14 to 16 of August.
