CBI summons ex-NCB officer Sameer Wankhede in cruise drug seizure case. Sameer Wankhede and two others have been accused of serious irregularities owing to which an “independent witness” in the cruise ship case had allegedly conspired with others to extort ₹25 crore. “He has also not declared the source of his foreign visits properly. It was also found that Wankhede has indulged himself in sale and purchase of expensive wrist watches with a private entity

1. Under ‘Rozgar Mela’, PM Narendra Modi will distribute around 71,000 appointment letters to newly inducted recruits on May 16 via video conferencing. It will be conducted at 45 locations across the country in various central government departments.

2. Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep S Puri launched his Ministry’s mega campaign ‘Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar’, in New Delhi.

3. Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea challenging a Bombay High Court decision dismissing PIL against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju for their remarks on the judiciary and the Collegium system for appointment of judges.

4. NITI Aayog member VK Paul has said that firms in the public and private sectors should consider extending maternity leave from six months to nine months. He added that private sector should help the NITI Aayog with designing comprehensive care for the children by opening more creches and also working towards elderly care.

5. Doctors will now have to get a Unique Identification Number (UID) to be able to practice medicine in the country, as per the new regulations by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

6. Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has established the Centre for Processing Accelerated Corporate Exit (C-PACE) to streamline the process of removing companies from the MCA Register.

7. Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Monday cancelled his Delhi visit saying he had a stomach infection. Earlier in the day, Shivakumar said he and ex-CM Siddaramaiah were called by Congress high command amid race for the next CM.

8. Punjab government announced a hike in power tariffs from Tuesday. Domestic consumers will have to pay ₹15 per kilowatt as additional fixed charges and the per unit tariff will be 25-80 paise. Hike for commercial consumers will be by 28-46 paise per unit.

9. Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday threatened to launch a massive agitation across Rajasthan if action isn’t taken on his demands by May-end. Pilot demanded the disbanding of Rajasthan Public Service Commission, its reconstitution and compensation for those affected by government job exam paper leak cases. He also sought a probe into corruption allegations against the previous BJP government.

10. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced the state government will challenge a Calcutta HC order that terminated the employment of nearly 36,000 primary teachers in state-sponsored and aided schools.

CRIME REPORT

1. National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 13 locations in Jammu and Kashmir in a terror funding case. The agency raided Budgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Srinagar and Anantnag districts in the case for carrying out terrorist and subversive activities in the state by various proscribed organizations including Jamaat-e-Islami

2. A court in Rajasthan’s Kota on Monday directed the district police to file an FIR against Rajasthan Congress in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for his remarks against PM Narendra Modi. He had reportedly said, “If Adani and Ambani have to be removed, Modi should be finished first.” The court has asked the police to file a report after its investigation.

3. Over 100 people have been detained so far in connection with a clash between two groups in Maharashtra’s Akola that left a man dead and injured several others.

4. Following the deaths of at least 14 people after they consumed spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said the case will be transferred to Crime Branch-CID for further investigation.

1. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is projected to reach a value of 130 billion dollars by 2030. 2. Billionaire investor George Soros’ firm has dumped its entire stake in Tesla, regulatory filings showed. It also cut its holdings in Tesla-rival Rivian in the first quarter. Soros bought shares in Tesla in 2022, and bought $35 million of Tesla convertible bonds in 2018.

3. Bank of Baroda launches Electronic Bank Guarantee: Bank of Baroda has announced its partnership with National E-Governance Services Limited (NeSL) to launch the Electronic Bank Guarantee (BG) system.

1. The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival is an upcoming film festival due to take place from 16 to 27 May 2023. Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund will serve as jury president.

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan will lead an Indian delegation to Cannes International Film Festival from 16th to 27th May.

Four Indian films,’ including Kanu Behl’s Agra and Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy, have made it to the official selection in the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from these, many Indian films will be screened in Marche du Films. A restored Manipuri film ‘Ishanhou’ will be showcased in the ‘Classics’ section.

2. PVR INOX plans to shut down approximately 50 cinema screens over the next six months, the company said. These properties are loss-making or housed in malls that have reached the end of their life cycle with little hope of any revival.
