Union minister RK Ranjan Singh’s house set on fire in Manipur. Violence continues in the northeastern state of Manipur, with miscreants torching the residence of Union Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh in Imphal’s Kongba on Thursday night. The residence in Imphal was set on fire while the minister was in Kerala. While Singh comes from the Meiti community, he has continued to appeal to both sides to stay away from violence and restore peace in the state.

1. Cyclone Biparjoy Landfall started in Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat; More than one lakh people from coastal areas and low-lying villages successfully evacuated.

Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat on Thursday evening with a wind speed of 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph as heavy rains lashed the coastal region.

2. Western Railway on Thursday announced cancellation of a few more trains as a precautionary measure in view of cyclone Biparjoy over the next three days.

11. The Congress government led by Siddaramaiah in Karnataka has decided to scrap the law against religious conversion. The government will introduce a Bill to repeal the amendments to the anti-conversion law in the upcoming state Assembly session, which starts on July 3.

17. New MBBS norms introduced, 80% village attendance must for exams: Village outreach will be a compulsory part of MBBS undergraduate curriculum from the 2023-24 academic session commencing in August and students will need minimum 80 per cent attendance in such visits to be eligible to write exams.

Major Changes

(a) Third Professional part II (MBBS final part II) will now be called NEXT (National Exit Test)

(b) Requirement of 40% pass marks in each theory paper removed; now 50% aggregate needed if there are two papers in a given subject

(c) Biochemistry and microbiology to have one paper of 100 marks instead of two papers of 100 marks each as done previously

5. Avtar Singh Purba alias Khanda, a prominent Khalistan supporter who was involved in the attack on the Indian High Commission in London, died at a hospital in the city of Birmingham on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness, a United Kingdom-based Sikh organisation said.

1. Centre reduces 5% basic import duty on edible oils to ensure affordable prices for consumers.

1. The Defence Ministry signed a contract of 500 crore rupees with an indigenous firm for the supply of Radio Relay Containers to strengthen the Indian Army’s communication system

2. National Security Guard (NSG) conducted a mass Yoga programme at the historic Lal Quila in New Delhi to mark the 9th International Yoga Day to be celebrated on 21st June.

3. Indian Navy has released exclusive footage capturing a historic moment as its two aircraft carriers, the INS Vikramaditya and the INS Vikrant, operated in tandem in the Arabian Sea.

The INS Vikramaditya, a modified Kiev-class carrier, became the Indian Navy’s flagship in 2013 after being acquired from Russia.

The Made-In-India INS Vikrant, designed and built by Cochin Shipyard, is the country’s first indigenously constructed carrier. It commenced sea trials in 2021 and is projected to achieve full combat readiness by the end of 2023.

4. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has received communication from the Ministry of Defence, announcing that it has been declared as the L1 (lowest) bidder by the Indian Navy for the MR/Mid Life Upgrade of an Indian Naval Ship.

The final contract will be executed in the appropriate timeframe. The estimated value of the contract is approximately Rs 3 billion, with an expected duration of around 24 months.
