1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the International Telecommunication Union ITU – World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi today. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the 8th edition of India Mobile Congress 2024 during the programme.

2. The 5th National Water Awards 2023 were announced in New Delhi yesterday. Odisha has bagged the first prize in the category of Best State followed by Uttar Pradesh in the second position. Gujarat and Puducherry have jointly secured the third position. President Smt Droupadi Murmu will confer the 5th National Water Awards in New Delhi on the 22nd of this month.

3. In Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has invited Omar Abdullah, Leader of the Legislature Party of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference to form the new government in the Union Territory.

4. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will interact with the Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers in New Delhi today. During the meeting, the probationary officers will share their training experiences with the Home Minister.

5. The meeting of the Joint Committee of Parliament to discuss the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was held yesterday in New Delhi. However, some opposition MPs boycotted the meeting alleging that the panel did not function as per the rules.

6. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation announced the launch of its first two initiatives, the Prime Minister Early Career Research Grant (PMECRG) and the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas -Electric Vehicle (MAHA- EV) Mission.

The PMECRG invites early career researchers to join the country’s transformative journey and contribute to the advancement of India’s scientific excellence and innovation.

7. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh has emphasized the need for enhanced India-Sweden collaboration in research and innovation among others. Addressing the 11th India-Sweden Innovation Day virtually in New Delhi yesterday, Dr Singh highlighted that India is climbing rapidly on innovation indices.

8. Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal urged all stakeholders of the Power Sector to collaborate to achieve 2,100 Gigawatts of power generation by 2047. Addressing the Central Electricity Authority Brainstorming Conclave in New Delhi, the Minister emphasised the critical role of renewable energy in India’s future power mix.

9. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that the National Education Policy is aimed at creating globally responsible citizens and vision among students. He was speaking at the India Leadership Summit 2024 organised by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum in New Delhi.

10. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that 400 pumps of ethanol bio-fuel are being established across the country. He was speaking at the BioEnergy Summit 2024 organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi.

11. The Maharashtra Cabinet approved the Damanganga-Vaitarna-Godavari river-linking project along with Damanganga-Ekdare-Godavari, which will resolve the problem of water scarcity in North Maharashtra and Marathwada regions. Both the river-linking projects are worth 15,710 rupees.

12. In Jammu and Kashmir, the government has directed both Divisional Commissioners and all 20 Deputy Commissioners to ensure the demarcation of the land of temples in their respective jurisdiction and the removal of encroachments. Detailed status of all the historic temples will be collected and hosted on the website of the Department of Culture.

13. The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, launched on 13 October 2021, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks three years of transformative achievements in India’s infrastructure landscape. The initiative has significantly improved project execution by integrating data from over 44 central ministries and 36 states and union territories, leading to reduced logistics costs and enhanced service delivery.

14. Wayanad Gets Advanced X-Band Radar : After devastating floods and landslides claimed over 200 lives in Kerala’s Wayanad district in July 2024, the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences took a crucial step to bolster disaster preparedness by approving the installation of an X-band radar in the region.

15. The Tamil Nadu Regional Met Department has forecast heavy rains till 18 Oct : The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till 18th October.

16. In Kerala, the IMD issued an Orange alert in Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall. Isolated heavy rain is likely in four other districts.

1. A Mumbai court on Monday remanded the third person arrested for the killing of Nationalist Congress Party leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique to police custody till October 21. The accused, Pravin Lonkar, was arrested on Sunday from Pune and is accused of enlisting two of the three alleged shooters who opened fire at Siddique on Saturday night in Mumbai’s Bandra area.

2. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that the trial for the murder of NCP leader, Baba Siddique will be conducted in a fast-track court. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, he asserted that no individual found guilty will be spared.

3. Uttar Pradesh, the situation is improving and returning to normalcy in Hardi area of Bahraich district where clashes erupted during Durga idols immersion. Internet services are still blocked in the district. Additional force from Gorakhpur zone along with companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary, CRPF and RAF have been deployed in the area.

4. In Manipur: Security forces arrest 7 KCP (Nongdrenkhomba Group) insurgents in Imphal.

5. West Bengal Government has requested the protesters to withdraw their proposed ‘droho carnival’ today on the day of the government’s carnival programme. Following state chief secretary Manoj Pant’s meeting with the doctors’ association at Swasthya Bhawan, Shri Pant informed the media that an e-mail had been sent to the junior doctors in this regard.

6. BJP came down heavily on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge after his family reportedly decided to return the five-acre land allotted to the Siddhartha Vihar Trust. The trust being run by the Kharge family was allotted the land in the Hardware Sector of the Hi-Tech Defence and Aerospace Park in Bagaluru by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board.

1. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has revised the ceiling prices of eight scheduled drugs to meet the twin objectives of availability and affordability. It has approved an increase in the ceiling prices of these drugs by 50 per cent of their current ceiling prices. Most of these drugs are low-cost and generally used as first-line treatment crucial to the public health programmes of the country.

2. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been upgraded to the status of Maharatna, making it the 14th Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) to receive this prestigious classification from the Government of India. This announcement, made on October 12, enhances HAL’s operational autonomy and financial capabilities, allowing it to invest up to 15% of its net worth in projects.

3. Advanced UAV manufacturer SKYBER Aerospace has announced a strategic partnership with Dubai-based SIBIA Technologies to tap into the fast-growing UAV market in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), projected to reach $5.34 billion by 2029. This multi-year agreement covers all facets of the UAV industry, including sales, training, operational support, and technological innovation.

1. Renowned Marathi and Hindi actor Atul Parchure, best known for his comic roles, yesterday passed away after battling cancer. He was 57 years old. Mr Parchure began his career as a child actor and went on to enjoy an extensive career in film, television, and theatre. He was known for his roles in Hindi films including ‘All The Best’, ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, and ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, as well as Marathi films such as ‘Navra Maza Navsacha’, ‘Amhi Satpute’, ‘Narbachi Wadi’, and ‘Alibaba Aani Chalishitale Chor’.

2. One of us’: A R Rahman dedicates song to 🇺🇸USA Vice President Kamala Harris . The White House bid gets a boost from legendary Indian music composer A R Rahman, who has come out in support of her ‘vision for an equitable world’, and recording some of his popular songs like ‘Jai Ho’ to inspire Indian American voters.

3. Indranand Singh Jha, a celebrated former radio presenter and compere of Akashvani Darbhanga, passed away at the age of 77 in his ancestral village, Chanaur, Darbhanga. Known affectionately as Khur Khur Bhai , Jha gained immense popularity for his rural radio talk program Gamghar, which resonated with listeners throughout his career.

1. Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai, SM, VSM assumes charge as Director General Medical Services (Navy) on 14 Oct 24. The Flag Officer was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps on 30 Dec 1986.

2. S Paramesh has been appointed as the new chief of the Indian Coast Guard, effective October 15. Currently serving as the officiating Director General, Paramesh brings over three decades of experience, having commanded major vessels and held key operational roles.
