Defence Ministry imposes phased ban on import of 928 military items to promote self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector. announces 4th positive indigenisation list in continuation of the first three such lists, which contained a total of 1,238 items. The by-elections were held in Suar and Chhanbey assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Ansari, contested as the candidate of the Apna Dal (S) and BJP alliance.
7. In Odisha, following the successful trial run of the Howrah-Puri Vande Bharat Express, the semi-high-speed train is expected to commence operations on 15 May. The first full trial run was conducted on 28 April with the train leaving Howrah at 6:10 am and arriving in Puri at 12:35 pm.

CRIME REPORT
1. Two men who allegedly killed a police constable in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district were shot dead in an encounter with police on Sunday. The constable was posted at a highway police outpost and was shot dead while he was trying to stop the men on a motorcycle. The incident took place on the intervening night of May 9 and 10.
2. The top court was hearing the special leave petition of V R Sanal Kumar, a former scientist at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) against the order of his dismissal from service which was upheld by the Kerala High Court.
The Supreme Court has junked a scientist’s plea challenging his dismissal from service by ISRO, saying the space agency was justified in suspecting his honesty and integrity on account of his unauthorised association with a South Korean institution involved in rocketry research, a strategic subject of his employer.
3. Six women died on the spot after an autorickshaw in which they were travelling in collided head-on with a private bus in Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh.

1. SEBI floated a consultation paper for regulating all web-based platforms offering fractional ownership of real estate assets to protect small investors.
2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 12 imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 2.92 crore on Canara Bank for non-compliance.
3. HSBC units will pay $75 million to settle US CFTC charges related to manipulative and deceptive trading and record-keeping failures. While HSBC Bank USA agreed to pay a $45 million civil penalty, HSBC Bank USA, HSBC Bank PLC and HSBC Securities together agreed to pay $30 million.

1. The fourth edition of the India-Indonesia bilateral exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’ is scheduled from May 14-19. Indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette INS Kavaratti arrived at Indonesia’s Batam to participate in the bilateral exercise.Exercise Samudra Shakti is aimed at enhancing interoperability, jointness and mutual cooperation between the two navies.
2. The Defence ministry has banned import of spares and components used in helicopters like HTT-40 trainer aircraft, light combat helicopter, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Jaguar, and other defence platforms.
3. India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, will travel to Sunnylands, California to take part in a meeting of the top military commanders of Quadrilateral (QUAD) countries.
The military commanders’ meeting is coming ahead of the third edition of the QUAD Leaders’ Summit, which is scheduled to be held on 24 May in Sydney.
4. Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a gunfight broke out between terrorists and security forces at Anderwan Sagam hamlet in the Kokarnag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Official sources said a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of terrorists.
5. The Nepali Army has begun the procurement process of acquiring weapons from a Chinese company, North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) that has been accused of providing inexpensive arms to South Asian and African nations.
