supreme court verdict eknath shinde uddhav thackeray

The Supreme Court will on Thursday pronounce its verdict on a clutch of cross-petitions filed by the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions of the Shiv Sena, pertaining to the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will deliver its verdict on pleas related to the political crisis that led to the fall of the three-party MVA government led by Uddhav Thackeray following a revolt by Shinde.

1. Multiple Indian unicorns have seen a markdown in their valuations by private investors. On Wednesday, it was reported that Vanguard marked down Ola’s valuation by 35% to $4.8 billion. A couple of days ago, Swiggy’s valuation was reported to be halved by Invesco, to $5.5 billion. Earlier, the world’s biggest asset management company BlackRock slashed BYJU’S valuation by 50% internally.

2. The board of Godrej Consumer Products on Wednesday approved raising up to ₹5,000 crore through issuance of non-convertible debentures. The company posted a consolidated net profit of ₹452.14 crore for the quarter ended March, recording a 24% jump from the year-ago period. Its revenue also surged about 10% to around ₹3,200 crore.

3. In a significant move to promote reforms and bring ease of doing business, Department of Defence Production has waived off Quality Assurance (QA) charges levied by the QA Agencies under its administrative control for the stores meant for exports.

1. After West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee banned the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ on Monday, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed against the same in Calcutta High Court. The petitioner on Wednesday told the court that the state government’s decision is against the right to freedom of speech. The case will be heard by the court on May 15.

2. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday said that ‘The Kerala Story’ has been made tax-free in the state.

DEFENCE

1. A government regulatory body has called for a design review of a “safety-critical system” on the Dhruv advanced light helicopter. It involved in a string of accidents including one last week, may be in order, according to a top government regulatory body responsible for the certification of the airworthiness of military aircraft.

2. Most of the military’s ALHs are currently grounded for comprehensive checks after the string of accidents. The Indian Air Force’s latest light combat helicopters (LCH), which inherit several features of the ALH, were also grounded.

3. India’s TEJAS MK-2 fighter aircraft is intended to replace a range of combat aircraft in the Indian Air Force, including the Mirage 2000. The TEJAS MK-2 is also intended to compete with the Saab Gripen internationally.

India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) TEJAS MK-2 program is languishing without funding, months after the project was approved.

India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) officially approved the project on 1 September 2022 for development, flight testing, and certification. Janes previously reported that funding of INR66.17 billion (USD809.17 million) was sanctioned.
