Election Commission announces schedule for assembly elections in 5 states

The assembly elections in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana will be held between 7th to 30th of next month, while the counting for all five states will take place on 3rd December. The Election Commission today announced the poll schedule for these five states. In Mizoram, the polling will be held on 7th November and the notification will be issued on 13th of this month. Chhattisgarh will go to poll in two phases on 7th and 17th of November and notification will be issued on 13th of this month for the first phase and on 21st of this month for the second phase. In Madhya Pradesh, the voting will take place on 17th November and notification will be issued on 21st October while Rajasthan will go to polls on 23rd November for which notification will be issued on 30th October. The voting for the Telangana assembly will be held on 30th November while notification will be issued on the 3rd November.

MADHYA PRADESH CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday cancelled two of his events after the Election Commission of India announced the Assembly poll schedule for the state, which brought the model code of conduct in force with immediate effect. Assembly polls will be held in the state on November 17 and votes will be counted on December 3.

7. TAMIL NADU Assembly on October 9 passed a resolution that directed the Karnataka government to release waters of the Cauvery river into the state as per the order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).

8. CWMA on September 29 upheld the order of Cauvery Water Management Committee that directed the Karnataka government to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu between September 28 and October 15.

10. Polling day in Rajasthan coincides with Dev Uthani Ekadashi, an auspicious occasion when more than 50,000 weddings are likely to take place. Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be observed on November 23, when voting for the 200-member Rajasthan assembly will also be held.

11. Supreme Court Monday said the appointment of the chief justice of Manipur high court has finally received the Centre’s attention and will be notified “shortly”, over three months after the apex court collegium had recommended Delhi high court judge Siddharth Mridul for the post.

13. Election Commission of India, ECI has announced that Bye-Election for one Assembly legislative seat in Nagaland will be conducted on November 7. A ECI notification issued on Monday stated that the Commission has decided to hold bye-election to fill vacancy in the 43-Tapi Assembly Constituency (ST) of Nagaland.

1. Delhi High Court on Monday sought Central government’s reply on a plea filed by former Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy seeking information under Right to Information (RTI) Act regarding Chinese incursions into Indian territory.

2. Slain gangster Atiq Ahmed’s minor sons Ahzam and Aban were released from a juvenile home in Rajrooppur and handed over to their aunt Parveen Ahmed Qureshi in Prayagraj on Monday.

Following the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year, the police put the two sons of Atiq Ahmed in a juvenile home.

3. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday took cognizance of alleged inhuman treatment of children in an illegal madrassa in Nainital district and ordered a verification of all the madrassas being run in the state.

4. A video purportedly showing a man being burnt in Manipur has gone viral, attracting condemnation from a tribal organisation on Monday, with the government recommending a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the matter stating that it is linked to the incident in which two women were paraded naked.

The video of the burning man was shot on May 4, the same day when two women were paraded naked by a mob.

5. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has issued a stern warning to the state government. He declared that his party workers are prepared to set fire to toll booths across the state if they face any hindrance in their mission of ensuring small vehicles are exempted from paying toll charges.

1. The Indian Army and Air Force have completed the fourth phase of Emergency Procurements (EP) with the Army finalizing over 70 schemes worth nearly ₹11,000 crore and the Indian Air Force concluding 64 contracts worth around ₹8,137 crore.

Under this, the armed forces could procure weapons systems up to ₹300 crore on an urgent basis without any further clearance to cut short the procurement cycle.

2. The Indian Navy has introduced a new ‘360 degree appraisal mechanism’ for promotion boards to address the limitations of the current top-down approach. The new mechanism will include large-scale surveys from peers and subordinates to assess an officer’s professional knowledge, leadership attributes, suitability in war/crisis, and potential for higher ranks. The feedback obtained will be analyzed by a Board of Officers and given to the officers for behavioral changes and improvements.

3. The Indian air force is eyeing the procurement of additional Hindustan Aeronautics TEJAS MK-1A fighters, Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) and other weapon systems, valued at approximately Rs1.7 trillion ($21 billion).The acquisitions will cost Rs41 billion in the 2024 financial year, which starts on 1 April 2024.
