1. Vice President of India, Shree C.P Radhkrishnan, visited Phagwara near Jalandhad, Punjab to present degrees to the passing out students of the Lovely Professional University on its 12th Convocation.

2. The holy town of Somnath has been transformed into a divine landscape as the four-day Somnath Swabhiman Parv continues at the first Jyotirlinga. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to join the celebrations today, the entire region is resonating with spiritual fervour and a deep sense of national identity.

3. Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) C Sudarshan Reddy has directed all district collectors and district election officers to give wide publicity to the phone numbers of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and actively promote the ‘Book-a-Call with BLO’ facility available on the Election Commission of India’s ECINET platform to improve voter mapping and verification.

4. The Press Information Bureau of Raipur organised a one-day regional media workshop, Vartaalap, in Bilaspur yesterday. Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu attended the event as the Chief Guest. The central theme of the workshop was the ‘Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G).

5. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has assured that the government will accommodate students affected by the closure of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College by adjusting them in other institutions. He asserted that students’ education will not be allowed to suffer. The Chief Minister also said that the Jammu and Kashmir government will not withdraw the grant-in-aid provided to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University.

6. Over four crore participants, including 3.75 crore students, have signed up for the ninth edition of the Prime Minister’s annual interaction programme, Pariksha Pe Charcha, as board examinations draw closer. This has set a new Guinness World Record.

7. The Winter Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has been extended by one day, till 09 Jan. Delhi Parliamentary Affairs Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that due to the disruption by the Opposition for the past two days, the decision to extend the session has been taken

8. The Jammu Division of Northern Railway has announced the extension of services of a special reserved train between New Delhi and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, citing heavy passenger demand and the convenience of travellers.

*Train number 04081 from New Delhi to Katra will operate on 9th and 10th of this month, while train number 04082 from Katra to New Delhi will run on 10th and 11th of January 2026.

9. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced new safety rules for sleeper buses, including mandatory fire detection systems, emergency exits, and driver drowsiness alerts, to prevent accidents and save lives.

10. The Government moves to add sound to E-rickshaws and E-karts for pedestrian safety: The ministry of road transport and highways has extended the mandatory provision of fitting of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) to E-rickshaws and E-karts along with all new private and commercial electric under M and N category of vehicles with effect from October 1, 2026 while the existing models will have time till October 1, 2027 to fit AVAS.

11. Recently, The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant virtually inaugurated India’s first fully paperless district court in Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala. This historic milestone marks the complete digital transformation of district judiciary operations, making all judicial proceedings entirely electronic from case filing to final judgment.

12. Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah virtually launched the National IED Data Management System (NIDMS), marking a significant step towards strengthening the country’s counter-IED and internal security architecture.

13. `No need to visit RTA offices for vehicle registration’: Telangana government has waived the condition for vehicle owners to visit the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) offices for registration.

Under new norms, permanent registration will be completed directly at authorised vehicle dealerships. The decision was taken following directions issued by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy during a review meeting with transport department officials recently.

14. An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale was felt in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday at 2.44 AM. The epicentre was in Tajikistan.

1. The Uttarakhand government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the high-profile Ankita Bhadari case.

Ankita Bhandari (11 November 2003 – 18 September 2022) was an Indian receptionist from Pauri who was allegedly raped and subsequently murdered at the Vanantra Resort in Ganga-Bhogpur in Rishikesh , Uttarakhand..

2. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee obstructed raids and investigations at the office and residence of I-PAC head Pratik Jain. Due to disorder in the court, the hearing was stalled, and Justice Shubhra Ghosh deferred the matter until January 14.

3. Chhattisgarh, as many as 63 Maoists surrendered in Dantewada district yesterday. Of these, 36 Maoists were carrying a total reward of one crore nineteen lakh fifty thousand rupees. The Maoists surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Rai.

4. Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has lodged complaints at both the Electronics Complex Police Station and Shakespeare Sarani Police Station against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) following yesterday’s search operation at the residence and office of I-PAC chief Pratik Jain.

5. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance in the case of a viral video from Hubballi, Karnataka, showing a female party worker allegedly being assaulted during arrest by police personnel. The Commission has condemned the incident and issued a letter to the Karnataka Director General of Police in the matter.

6. The Delhi Court frames charges against RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members in Railways land for jobs corruption case.

7. The Supreme Court on Friday continued hearing pleas seeking changes to its earlier order on stray dogs, with actor Sharmila Tagore appearing as one of the applicants through her counsel. The counsel said the law already recognises a difference between normal street dogs and aggressive dogs and argued that some aggressive dogs can improve after treatment and behavioural care, though it accepted that aggression can return in some cases.

In Himachal Pradesh, a private bus met with a tragic accident near Haripur Dhar in Sirmaur district yesterday afternoon, after plunging into a deep gorge. The bus was on its way from Solan to Haripur Dhar. A total of 45 passengers were travelling in the bus. Of these, 12 people died on the spot, while 33 others sustained serious injuries.

The accident is reported to have occurred due to the bus skidding on water accumulated on the road. The injured have been referred to IGMC Shimla for treatment.

1. Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma inaugurates Know Your Army exhibition in Jaipur ahead of 78th Army Day. A grand Army Day Parade will be organised in Jaipur on the 15th of this month.

2. In Jammu and Kashmir, Security forces launched a search operation in Samba district following suspicious movement. The Army and police carried out a joint checking campaign in the Meera Sahib Border area of Jammu. The measures are part of the overall security preparedness to ensure peaceful Republic Day functions.

3. India has launched Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious national programme aimed at building a comprehensive, multi-layered air defence shield to counter emerging aerial threats, especially hostile drones. The initiative reflects a strategic shift in India’s defence posture as unmanned aerial systems increasingly reshape modern warfare, particularly along sensitive borders with Pakistan.

4. Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), the Hyderabad-based laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Conducts Successful Long-Duration (Over 12 Mins) Ground Test of Full-Scale Cooled Scramjet Engine For Hypersonic Missile.

Launched on Thursday, this pan-Army system promises to deliver near real-time visibility of logistic items, spanning from frontline units to Army Headquarters.
