11. India has launched two special category visa for international students intending to pursue higher education in academic institutions in the country.

The ‘e-student visa’ and ‘e-student-x’ visa have been introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and all applicants will have to use the ‘Study in India’ (SII) portal launched by the government.

12. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday declined RJD patriarch and former Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s “offer” of returning to the grand alliance comprising the RJD, the Congress and Left parties, indicating that he had made a “mistake” earlier of joining hands with him.

13. Delhi’s air quality has improved, with the 24-hour average AQI recorded at 339 at 4 pm and 335 at 5 pm on Sunday. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) noted that trends suggest further reductions in AQI levels. Despite this improvement, Stage 1 and Stage 2 restrictions will continue to be enforced.

In 1675, at the age of nine he was formally installed as the leader of the Sikhs after his father Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed by Emperor Aurangzeb. His father was the ninth Sikh Guru. His four biological sons died during his lifetime – two in battle and two executed by the Mughal governor Wazir Khan.

1. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key accused in the Phulwari Sharif PFI terror funding module case. The case is related to alleged involvement of cadres of banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) in unlawful and anti-national activities in Bihar.

2. National Investigation Agency (NIA) searched the house of a recently arrested accused in Jamia Nagar in south Delhi. The search led to the seizure of digital devices and incriminating financial documents including debit cards, pass book and cheque books of multiple banks. NIA in a statement said that the case involves a criminal conspiracy by the accused persons engaged in sending vulnerable Indian youth to the Golden Triangle Region in Lao PDR. The victims of the human trafficking and cyber slavery racket were forced to commit cyber scams in Lao, targeting European and American citizens.

3. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted searches at nine locations in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum in connection with naxalism case pertaining to recovery of money and incriminating materials.

1. The RBI has approved the merger of Bangalore-based *National Co-operative Bank* with *Cosmos Co-operative Bank* of Maharashtra, effective *January 6, 2025*, as part of ongoing banking sector consolidation. Post-merger, National Co-operative Bank branches will function under Cosmos Co-operative.

2. India’s fintech leader BharatPe plans to sell 25% of its 49% stake in Unity Small Finance Bank, aiming to raise around $800 million (Rs 6,500 crore). The move aligns with RBI’s regulatory guidelines to reduce BharatPe’s stake in the bank.

3. India is revising its GDP base year from 2011-12 to 2022-23 to better reflect the current economic landscape. This update, aimed at improving the accuracy of national accounts, will be implemented by early 2026.

1. Three crew members killed as Indian Coast Guard helicopter crashes at Porbandar Airport Runway in Gujarat. The helicopter was on a routine training sortie. It had two Pilots and one Air Crew Diver at the time of incident.

2. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurates NCC Republic Day Camp-2025 in Delhi; Emphasizes on role of nationalism in India’s development.

3. The French Carrier Strike Group (CSG), led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle, is set to arrived in India on 4 January 2025. This deployment underscores the strengthening of naval ties between India and France, aimed at enhancing regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

French naval ships FS Forbin and FS Alsace have arrived in Kochi, India, on 5 January 2025, as part of the French Carrier Strike Group (CSG) led by the aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle.

4. India has significantly increased its border security measures in response to the deepening military ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh. This development is particularly concerning for India due to its strategic implications for regional security.

The Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), Daljit Singh Chaudhary, recently visited the North Bengal Frontier to evaluate border security, particularly focusing on the sensitive Siliguri Corridor. This corridor is crucial as it connects India’s north-eastern states to the mainland and is in close proximity to Bangladesh.

5. Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate, INS Tushil has arrived at the Port of Dakar in Senegal as part of its ongoing operational deployment. The Defence Ministry said that INS Tushil will engage in various military and social engagements during the port call, including interactions with senior Senegalese military and government officials. The ship will also organise social interaction onboard to showcase Indian culture. On completion, the ship will participate in a Passage Exercise and joint patrol with the Senegalese Navy off the waters of the West African Coast.

6. Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) ‘Tarini’ carrying two women officers of the Indian Navy left the Lyttelton Port in New Zealand on January 4 for the longest and the most challenging leg of its global expedition. The INSV Tarini reached Lyttelton on December 22, completing the second leg of the historic “double-handed circumnavigation” being undertaken by two Indian Navy women officers — Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A — which highlights India’s growing prowess of maritime exploration.
