The Delhi High Court on Monday upheld summons issued to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as an accused in a criminal defamation case for retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in May 2018. Retweeting a social media post carrying defamatory content will amount to defamation under Section 499 of the IPC, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said while refusing to quash the trial court’s 2019 order summoning Kejriwal. The court also said that some sense of responsibility must be attached while retweeting content on social media about which a person does not have knowledge.

5. The Centre on Monday gave powers to all states and Union Territories to declare the terrorist group Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) a banned organisation under the anti-terror law UAPA. On January 29, the Central government had extended the ban imposed on the SIMI for five more years.

6. The Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Sonam Wangchuk, a key campaigner for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, on Monday said they would launch a fast unto death from February 19 to press their demands and that details of participation of local residents in the agitation were being worked out.

7. Bill proposing jail, fine for exam malpractices introduced in Lok Sabha. Students appearing in exams, in case caught cheating, will not face ‘criminal provisions’ but will remain covered by existing ‘administrative regulations’.

The Bill provides for imprisonment for a term not less than three years, which will be extendable to five years with fine up to Rs 10 lakh.

Sextortion’ racket busted in Haryana’s Bhiwani; An investigation into the alleged Rs 37 lakh “sextortion” from an elderly man in Bhiwani has led the Haryana Police to the busting of a racket wherein the accused would blackmail people by morphing the recording of video calls made through WhatsApp.
