1. The Rural Development Ministry has said that about 88 per cent of the wage payment has been made through Aadhaar Based Payment Bridge System (ABPS) till May this year.

2. National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has termed those reports as misleading and factually incorrect wherein it is claimed that Evolution and Periodic Table has been dropped from NCERT books.

3. President Droupadi Murmu has expressed grief over losing lives in the unfortunate rail accident in Balasore.

4. PM Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the triple train collision site in Odisha’s Balasore after chairing a high-level meeting to review the situation in connection with the incident.

(b) PM Modi also reportedly meet injured people in hospital. At least 288 people have lost their lives and hundreds of people have been injured in the incident that took place on Friday.

(c) Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reached the accident spot in Balasore in Odisha on Saturday morning.

(d) The Odisha Health Department on Saturday said 1,175 patients have been admitted to private hospitals so far after the triple train crash in Balasore on Friday. Of these, 793 patients have been discharged while 382 patients continue to be in the hospital among which two are critical.

(e) In the wake of the Odisha train accident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has sent an advisory to airlines to monitor any abnormal surge in airfares to and from Bhubaneswar and other airports in Odisha. Passengers can cancel or reschedule their flights without penalty, the MoCA added. Notably, 58 trains have been cancelled and 81 diverted after the accident.

(f) After the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore, Congress leader Rashid Alvi demanded the resignation of PM Narendra Modi.

(g) BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Saturday requested his fellow parliamentarians to donate a part of their salary to help the families of victims of the Odisha train accident.

(h) West Bengal government has granted an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of people from the state who died in the Odisha train accident, the CMO announced on Saturday. The state government has also declared ₹1 lakh for those who sustained injuries in the incident.

(j) The Centre has sent two teams of doctors from AIIMS, Bhubaneswar to Balasore and Cuttack to assist in relief operations at the rail accident site in Odisha.

(k) The Railway Ministry confirmeds that there was no ‘Kavach’ system on the route.

The ‘Kavach’ system would have saved the people as it alerts when a loco-pilot jumps a signal and then takes control of the brakes bringing the train to a halt automatically when it notices another train on the same line.

Kavach’ was introduced in 2022 as part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. A total of 2,000 km of railway network was planned to be brought under this technology.

6. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to review overall preparedness for flood management in the context of upcoming monsoon season.

7. Government has banned 14 fixed-dose drugs as they have been found to lack therapeutic justification and may pose risks to health.

8. Manipur, the peace committee consisting of different ministers and MLAs has been formed and teams have rushed to the violence affected areas to restore normalcy there.

9. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Manipur Police department have released press statements stating that the incident occurred due to the misunderstanding between the forces. The Assam Rifles and Manipur police are working together to restore normalcy in the State.

CRIME REPORT/MISHAPS

1. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Coromandel Express had accidentally entered the loop line. Loop lines are constructed in a station area to ease rail operations and accommodate a greater number of trains. They are generally 750 metres in length to accommodate full-length goods train with multiple engines. Such tracks return to the main line after a short distance.

2. At least 15 people were injured after suspected Kuki militants attacked two villages, Phayeng and Kangchup Chingkhong, in Manipur’s Imphal West district. They were armed with weapons and bombs. Two of the injured persons are critical. At least 98 people have died in the ethnic violence that broke out in the state a month ago.

3. Former Mumbai NCB chief Sameer Wankhede and his wife Kranti Redkar have alleged that they received death threats on social media. He is accused of seeking ₹25 crore bribe for not framing actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case.
