Special Parliament session called from September 18 to 22
The five day special Parliament session, scheduled to be held from 18 to 22 September will skip Question Hour, Zero Hour, and private members’ business, a notice by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said. This will be maintained for sessions to be held in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The session will have five sittings and members will be informed about the provisional calendar separately, the secretariats said.

1. 3. Government has constituted an eight member high level committee to examine One Nation, One Election. Former President Ram Nath Kovind has been appointed as Chairman of the committee.

15. The Delhi High Court has granted permission for two children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to continue undergoing stem cell therapy, despite a recommendation against its use by the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

16. The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, aimed at replacing the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), introduces modifications to the mercy petition process in death sentence cases. These changes encompass crucial aspects such as justiciability, time limits, and the gap between rejection and execution.

17. The Union government has issued a notification for the implementation of the amendments to the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867.

18. Telangana government has declared a holiday for Milad un Nabi, which is observed on the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammed (28 September). The day has been listed under ‘General Holidays.

19. Shops in Mumbai can’t be exempted from putting up signboards in Marathi because it is a cosmopolitan city, the Supreme Court observed on Friday, nudging traders from the city to comply with the 2022 law that requires Marathi signboards outside all shops, big and small, in Maharashtra.

20. towering statue of ‘Nataraja’, believed to be the world’s tallest, being installed at the venue of the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi, has been made using an ancient casting technique. Statue is 28-foot tall including the pedestal, was made using the ancient lost-wax technique of metal casting that was used for making the famed Chola bronzes.

The ‘Nataraja’ statue symbolises Lord Shiva as the ‘lord of dance’ and his cosmic power of creation and destruction.

21. Members of a women’s body held demonstrations across five valley districts of Manipur on Saturday, demanding withdrawal of a legal notice served to a politician by Assam Rifles.

1. Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an alleged 538 crore rupee money laundering case linked to Canara Bank.

2. The CBI filed a charge sheet on Saturday against three arrested railways officials in connection with the Balasore train accident in Odisha. The incident took place on 2nd of June.

The CBI had arrested the three Railway officials on 7th of July in connection with its probe in the accident which involved three trains and left 296 people dead and over 1,200 injured.

3. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has condemned the harrowing incident in Pratapgarh of Rajasthan after a woman was allegedly molested, stripped, and recorded on video.

4. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two persons for harbouring the terrorists who had killed five innocent civilians in Dhangri village of district Rajouri of Jammu and Kashmir in January this year.

5. A Delhi court has directed the prosecution of two juveniles, both around 17 years of age, as adults in a murder case, noting that the they were “emboldened” to commit the brutal crime after being let off early in another murder case.

The court noted that the two were well aware of the JJB proceedings and executed their conspiracy to murder the victim “in a perfectly planned manner”.

1. The Department of Public Enterprise (DPE) conferred ‘Navratna Status‘ upon Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF). Navratnas constitute a group of public sector firms endowed with the financial independence to invest up to Rs 1000 crore without necessitating approval from the central government.

2. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has recently given the green light to the merger of Tata SIA Airlines, which operates under the Vistara brand, with Air India, a subsidiary of Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd. This landmark merger also involves Singapore Airlines (SIA) and entails the acquisition of shares in the merged entity.

3. In a recent announcement that has garnered international attention, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been awarded an ‘A+’ rating in the prestigious Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023. This commendation places him at the pinnacle of central bank governors worldwide.

4. Recently in an event organized by the South Indian Panchayat Association in Coimbatore, Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Textiles, inaugurated the statue of RK Shanmugam Chetty, who served as the first Finance Minister of independent India.

5. Indian Railways has achieved freight loading of over 634 million tonnes between April and August this year which is over 13 million tonnes more than the corresponding period last year. In August this year, Railways has loaded over 126 million tonnes against 119 million tonnes in the same month last year, which shows a growth of over 6%.

6. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered a growth of 7.8 percent in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal (2023-2024).

1. The Assam Police Commando trainees from five special battalions marked the successful culmination of Phase I with the Indian Army at seven locations in Assam and Meghalaya on Friday after 40 weeks of intense training which has transformed the recruits into a formidable force.

A total of 2284 Commando recruits including 273 lady commandos, 269 Sub Inspectors including 15 lady Sub Inspectors of Assam Police Commando Battalions were trained by the Instructors of the Indian Army.

2. The Indian Army has placed an order for an undisclosed number of Israeli Spike anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) from Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems Pvt Ltd (KRAS). The contract, worth Rs 287 crore.

3. The Indian Naval Ship (INS) ‘Delhi’ arrived at the port of Colombo on a formal visit on Friday.

4. The Indian Air Force is planning to buy 100 more Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) TEJAS MK-1A fighter jets replacing the MiG-21 aircraft in its fleet.

5. The seventh and last stealth frigate of Project 17A, Mahendragiri, was launched at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) in Mumbai.

6. Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) launched a Joint operation with Manipur Police and Special Operations Groups (SOG) in general area Saram in Thoubal district of Manipur on Friday.

The team conducted extensive search and recovered one 303 Rifle along with a Magazine, two 36 HE Hand Grenades & one magazine each of INSAS, Carbine and SLR from Yerum Ching near Saram Village, Thoubal.
