1. Amid the heavy rainfall in Karnataka, the Dakshina Kannada district administration on 8 July issued a ‘red alert’ for Tuesday as India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rainfall.

3. Kharif crops have been sown in over 378 lakh hectare till date as against 331 lakh hectare last year. The crop sowing has increased by over 14 per cent as compared to last year. Crop sowing data released by the Agriculture Ministry.

4. Supreme Court of India to finalize names of two new judges to fill vacancies. The Supreme Court is currently operating with 32 judges, two short of its sanctioned strength of 34, following the recent retirements of justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna in April and May, respectively. Additionally, justice Hima Kohli is set to retire in September, which adds to the urgency for new appointments.

5. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expanded his cabinet following the trust vote victory in assembly. Of the 11 MLAs sworn in as Cabinet Ministers, six are from the JMM, four from the Congress and one from the RJD. Former Chief Minister, Champai Soren has been included in the cabinet.

6. Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi met with violence affected families in relief camps in Manipur. Addressing media persons in Imphal, he appealed to people to stop violence and live peacefully together.

7. The National Commission for Minorities held a meeting with representatives from 18 states and Union Territories to discuss the implementation and registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act.

8. In Maharashtra, many districts including Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall. Water logging was reported from many areas in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Flood-like situation developed in some areas of Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Buldana.

9. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir has introduced a ‘Pony Ambulance’ service for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2024, providing critical healthcare support to pilgrims during their journey.

10. President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a four-day tour to Odisha, visited the historic Udayagiri caves in Bhubaneswar yesterday. Udayagiri caves are famous for the Hathigumpha inscription which is carved out in Brahmi script. The inscription starts out with ‘Jain Namokar Mantra’ and highlights various military campaigns undertaken by Kharavela, a great monarch of Kalinga, the ancient name of Odisha.

11. Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma recently said that the state would not forcibly deport Zo ethnic people from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). According to an official from the state home department, close to 2,000 Zo ethnic individuals from Bangladesh have sought refuge in Mizoram since 2022.

12. In Madhya Pradesh, Governor Mangu Bhai Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ramniwas Rawat as a cabinet minister. Now the state council of ministers has a total of 31 ministers.

13. 12 Line Hyderabad Bangalore Highway Expansion, also known as the NH-44, is set to undergo a significant expansion, bringing prosperity and progress to the Rayalaseema region. The Central Government’s approval for this ambitious project marks a turning point in the region’s connectivity and economic growth.

14. The Government has announced significant improvements in telecom infrastructure to ensure seamless mobile connectivity for pilgrims of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra. The Department of Telecommunications has partnered with major Telecom Service Providers including Airtel, BSNL, and Reliance JIO, to enhance the infrastructure and provide continuous coverage along the Yatra routes.

15. The Dr. C. Narayana Reddy National Literary Award has been given to the famous Tamil author Sivashankari. The Sushila Narayana Reddy Trust made the statement to honor her important contributions to Tamil literature.

1. The government of Assam suspended Mr. Muanthang Tungnung, a 2000-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) Officer, after he failed to comply with his transfer orders.

2. The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and National Testing Agency to file a report before it on the NEET UG paper leak case by Wednesday. The top court also directed the CBI to file a status report on its investigation into the case so far.

1. Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea have hiked their prepaid and postpaid plan prices, causing a stir among users. Social media trends like ‘JioBoycott’ and ‘BSNL Ghar Wapsi’ reflect the growing discontent.

2. The government will reopen the application window for Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods, Air Conditioners and LED Lights for 90 days from 15th of this month. Commerce and Industry Ministry said, the application window will remain open from the 15th July to 12th October.

3. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has grown a lot in Gujarat during the fiscal year 2023–24, reaching a total of USD 7.3 billion. This is a 55% rise from the previous year.

4. Bank of Baroda (BoB) plans to raise up to ₹7,500 crore through Additional Tier-I (AT1) and Tier-II bonds to meet regulatory requirements and support business growth. This capital will be raised in multiple tranches up to March 31, 2025, and beyond, depending on market conditions.

5. Union Minister Piyush Goyal has announced an 80% reduction in licensing fees for women entrepreneurs and a 50% reduction for MSMEs under the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). This initiative aims to encourage greater participation from women and MSMEs in the petroleum and explosives sectors, balancing industry compliance with public safety.

6. Elisa de Anda Madrazo of Mexico has assumed the presidency of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for a two-year term from July 2024 to June 2026.

1. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI has notified amendments to the regulatory framework for broadcasting and cable services and releases. TRAI has removed the ceiling on network capacity fee of 130 rupees for 200 channels and 160 rupees for more than 200 channels. The fee will now be driven by market forces.

2. Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD has been running riot at the Indian box office and enjoying a record-breaking spree ever since it arrived. After making a smashing entry into the 500 crore club on Sunday, it managed to achieve another exciting feat on the next day. Monday, the biggie emerged as the 7th highest-grossing Indian film in the domestic market.

Kalki 2898 AD is an inspirational film from Hindu Ithihasas. The Mahabharat episodes in the movie are hurting Hindu pandits as showing Karna is bigger than Arjuna. The pandits started expressing themselves now. Hindu pandits are questioning that Nag Ashwin did not read Mahabharata completely he seems to be influenced by movies that show Karna as the greatest. But in Mahabharata, it’s clearly said that Karna is the main reason for Kurukshetra to happen.

1. The joint military exercise MAITREE 2024, between the Indian Army and the Royal Thailand Army, is currently underway in Tak Province, Thailand. This exercise marks a significant milestone in fostering military cooperation and enhancing the operational capabilities of the two nations under the United Nations charter.

2. In Jammu and Kashmir, at least two soldiers were injured after terrorists lobbed hand grenade and opened fire on an Army vehicle in the remote Machedi area of Kathua district.

3. Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has signed more than 150 defence manufacturing agreements valued at ₹25,000 crore (approximately $3 billion USD) as part of the UP Defence Industrial Corridor. These agreements aim to boost India’s defence production and exports, and they involve notable companies such as Adani Defence and BrahMos Aerospace. The projects in the UP Defence Corridor are expected to create 40,000 jobs across six districts in Uttar Pradesh.

4. India’s maiden human space mission, Gaganyaan, will be using indigenously manufactured parachutes to bring the crew safely back to Earth. The parachutes are being manufactured by the Ordnance Equipment Factory, Hazratpur, and a dozen sets of the parachutes have already been handed over to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

5. The Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft has joined RIMPAC 2024, the world’s largest multinational naval exercise, in Hawaii. RIMPAC, which is held biennially, brings together armed forces from 29 nations for a five-week training period. The exercise aims to enhance cooperation and joint operability among the participating forces. In Bharat there are 28 states and 8 Union territories.*
