A troubling incident unfolded in a village in the Kathua district, where two terrorists approached local homes asking for water. Suspicious of their intentions, the villagers refused their request and began raising alarms, leading to a violent response from the terrorists.
Incident Overview
The terrorists, upon encountering resistance from the villagers, became agitated and opened fire indiscriminately into the air and at a villager who was passing by. This caused panic among the residents, who immediately contacted the local authorities. The terrorists’ actions prompted a swift response from the security forces.
Police Response and Encounter:
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the Special Operations Group (SOG), Village Defence Guards (VDGs), and other security personnel, quickly mobilized to the area. They received information about the terrorists’ presence and initiated a search operation. The terrorists had taken cover in the nearby Chochru Gala heights.
According to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Anand Jain, the entire area was cordoned off to trap the terrorists. The ensuing gunfight between the terrorists and the security forces was intense. The coordinated efforts of the police, army, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) led to the successful neutralization of both terrorists.
Casualties and Aftermath
During the encounter, a member of the Village Defence Guard, Muhammad Sharief, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Sharief’s bravery and sacrifice were acknowledged by the police and local authorities, marking a significant loss to the community.
ADGP Anand Jain noted that the terrorists were part of a fresh infiltration group suspected to have crossed the border from Pakistan through the Kathua district. The security forces have intensified their search operations in the region to locate any remaining members of the group. Reinforcements have been deployed, and the area remains under strict surveillance to ensure the safety of the residents and to prevent further infiltration attempts.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
