An encounter ensued between security forces and hand-weapons-wielding militants in the Basantgarh region of Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, just days prior to the start of the annual Amarnath Yatra. A firefight ensued during a routine search operation undertaken early on Thursday morning, after credible information regarding suspicious movement in the area.
Search Operation Turns Violent
Official sources say that a combined team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army had conducted a cordon-and-search operation in the thick forested hills of Basantgarh. As security forces moved forward into the terrain, they were unexpectedly opened fire upon by suspected militants who were hiding there. The forces retaliated too, and an exchange of gunfire followed.
No casualties were officially reported at the time of reporting, but sources stated that the operation continued and that the area had been cordoned off to avoid any escape routes for the attackers.
Security Enhanced Pre Yatra
This development is timely, as the area is on high alert in preparation for the Amarnath Yatra, which starts on July 3. In the past few weeks, the authorities have intensified the deployment of security personnel in the Jammu and Kashmir state, especially on the yatra routes.
The authorities have also been carrying out routine monitoring, anti-terror exercises, and infrastructure inspections to guarantee the security of the thousands of pilgrims that will be traveling to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir.
Officials Keeping the Situation Under Close Watch
Top security leaders, such as local police chiefs and military commanders, are keeping close tabs on the ongoing operation. More soldiers have been redeployed to the region, and drone surveillance is being employed to monitor any more movement within the thick forests.
The episode has caused anxiety, but the authorities have tried to assure the public that every precaution is being taken. “We are geared up entirely to secure the Amarnath Yatra,” said a senior officer, and added that such operations are part of a larger strategy of neutralizing threats before they can pose a danger to civilian life.
The Udhampur encounter is a stark reminder of the region’s ongoing security issues, but also a testament to the guardianship of India’s armed forces in protecting national and religious occasions.
