Six Killed in Nizamuddin as Roof of Shrine Falls Near Humayun’s Tomb

Humayuns Tomb

What began as a routine Friday afternoon at a small shrine in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area turned into a devastating scene within seconds. On 15 August 2025, worshipers assembled at the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, a modest structure located a short distance from the famous Humayun’s Tomb. Shortly after prayers began, part of the roof above one of the rooms suddenly gave way, burying several people under heavy debris.

Witnesses remembered a loud cracking noise before the collapse, and then dust, chaos, and screams for help. Six people lost their lives immediately and several others were injured, some critically.

Speedy Response From Rescue Teams

The distress message was responded to in minutes by several agencies. Delhi Fire Services, police personnel, and the National Disaster Response Force arrived at the scene with machinery to rip open the rubble. Locals and tourists around also pitched in to rescue those trapped.

At least a dozen were rescued alive, most with head and fractures. They were taken in ambulances to hospitals such as AIIMS Trauma Center and LNJP Hospital for treatment.

Victims and Injured

Authorities subsequently identified the dead as three men and three women in their mid-30s to late 70s. Among the wounded was a small child who survived with superficial injuries but was under observation. The names of the victims were not released until families were notified.

No Damage to Humayun’s Tomb

Since the shrine is located close to the UNESCO-protected Humayun’s Tomb, early reports raised fears that the heritage site might be damaged. The Archaeological Survey of India released a statement to reassure people that the tomb remained intact and that the collapse happened in a different, smaller building not preserved under their protection.
